made one of the most beloved cars ever driv- en in the world. The Volkswagen Beetle be- gan to gain its irresistible contours in 1934 in Stuttgart, and thirty years later it became a symbol as an eternal car loved by every- one - rich and poor alike, from east and west, and there is almost nowhere on the planet that doesn’t have a VW Beetle fan club! The first models appeared in early 1939, under the official name “KdF-Wagen” (KdF meant “Kraft durch Freude” or “Strength through Joy”, which was the slogan of the German Labour Front, DAF). When the last exam- ple of this model was produced in Mexico in 2003, the Beetle was already the world’s best-selling model (without a design change) of any car in history. And then the modern version arrived.
The beginnings of this automobile com- pany can be traced back to the 1880s, when Karl Benz, working independently of Daimler, started working on a car that would be pow- ered using an internal combustion engine. There is no indication that these two geni- uses ever met at that time, but in 1926 their companies merged to form “Daimler-Benz AG”, which led to the emergence of the leg- end that is Mercedes-Benz. Interestingly, the responsibility for the name Mercedes be- longs to Austrian-Hungarian diplomat and automobile entrepreneur Emil Jellinek, who ordered 36 automobiles from the Daimler company in 1900 and asked that they be named after his daughter, Mercedes Jell- inek. That name was protected in 1902 as a brand name, while the three-pointed star, which symbolises Daimler’s idea of produc- ing engines for transport on land, in the air and on water, was introduced as a trademark in 1909. Since then it has marked all of the company’s products. Today Mercedes-Benz, Porsche and Maybach all still produce vehi- cles in Stuttgart and the surrounding area.
THE MOST BEAUTIFUL RETRO PARADE
Fans of old-timers particularly value the service centre located at the former airport, which is protected as a cultural monument. Every March sees lovers of classic cars from around the world gather to attend what is probably the most beautiful car fair in Ger- many, under the title Retro Classics. An ex- clusive collection of old-time classics will be paraded again this year from 2 nd to 5 th March, once again bringing together those who love classics, but also live a certain lifestyle.
AND THEN A BEETLE WAS BORN
The 1930s saw the world rocked by the worst ever financial crisis, and the dark shad- ows of the upcoming world war could be felt, but it was then that Dr Ferdinand Porsche
