ST. MICHAEL’S ORTHODOX CATHEDRAL

U

I n the very centre of the city, below Kneza Mi- haila (Prince Michael) Street, rises the golden tower of the Orthodox Cathedral, which was the endowment of Mihailo’s father, Prince Miloš Obrenović. It emerged on the site of ear- lier temples, the first of which dates back to the beginning of the eighteenth century. Today’s Orthodox Cathedral was built in less than nine years, between 1837 and 1845, and is dedicat- ed to the Archangel Michael – the patron saint of Prince Miloš. It is among the most important religious, cultural and artistic monuments of the Serbian people. Today it is also a symbol of the enlightening role of the church: buried there are the remains of the father of the mod- ern Serbian language, Vuk Stefanović Karadžić, and education reformer Dositej Obradović.

Spada u red najznačajnijih crkvenih, kulturnih i umetničkih spomenika srpskog naro- da. Danas je i simbol prosvetiteljske ulo- ge Crkve: u njoj su sahranjeni posmrtni ostaci oca savremenog srpskog jezika Vuka Stefanovića Karadžića i prosvet- nog reformatora Dositeja Obradovića.
