RITAM GRADA RHYTHM OF THE TOWN

T he city used to have 17 Dervish Tekke shrines where the works of great Sufi thinkers were studied. There were al- so a lot of mosques, but they disappeared in the stormy and turbulent history of Belgrade. All that remained is the Bayrakli Mosque in the Dorćol neighbourhood. It was built in 1575 as the Čohadži Mosque, named after its benefactor, mer- chant čohom (čojom) Haži-Ali. Husein-beg, assistant to the chief Turkish commander Ali Pasha, renewed this place of worship in 1741, and for a time it was called Husein-beg’s or Hussein-će- haja’s Mosque. In the late 18 th century it was renamed Bayrakli Mosque, after the banner (bajrak) that hung there. Following its restoration in the 19 th century, which was carried out by Serbi- an princes, it became the main city mosque. In first place here is love towards Allah, from which stems all other virtues - hones- ty, veracity, diligence, mercy etc.
