EASTER CORONATIONS, A GUARANTEE OF DIVINE SUPPORT
K oliko je Uskrs bio važan, možda ponajbolje svedoči činjenica da su srpski vladari – da pomenemo samo jednog, najvišeg u hijerarhiji – cara Stefana Dušana Nemanjića (1308–1355), birali Uskrs da se tog dana krunišu ili pak da krste svog sina prvenca i naslednika prestola. Tako se Dušan Silni krunisao za cara Srba i Grka na Uskrs, 16. aprila 1346. godine u Skoplju. Prema uverenju srednjovekovnog čoveka, Uskrs je praznik na koji se otvaraju dobro čuvane kapije između neba i zemlje, a milost božja doslovno lije na ve- rujuće. Vladar koji u tom času primi Svetu tajnu miropomazanja, prema opštem uverenju, koje posebno podupire Crkva, dobija najmoćniju podršku za izvršenje svojih obaveza. Ono što je za vladara kruna, za običnog čoveka je krštenje ili venčanje, a Uskrs je upravo praznik na koji se posle najdužeg posta u hrišćanskom kalendaru Srbi najradije venčava- ju ili krštavaju novorođeno potomstvo. Po narodnom verovanju, u ovo doba godine je ide- alno i preminuti, jer Uskrs navodno garantuje direktan odlazak u raj, bez obzira na minu- li učinak u životu.

P erhaps best testifying to how important Easter was is the fact that the Serbian ruler – to mention only one, at the top of the hierarchy – Emperor Stefan Dušan Nemanjić (1308- 1355), most happily chose Easter for the day of his coronation, or for the baptising of his rstborn son and heir to the throne. Thus, Dušan the Mighty was crowned emperor of the Serbs and Greeks on Easter, 16 th April 1346, in Skopje. According to the beliefs of medieval men, Easter is the holiday when the well-guarded “gates” between heaven and earth are opened, and the grace of God literally pours onto the faithful. A ruler who at that time is received by the world of secret anointment, according to a gen- eral belief that is supported speci cally by the Church, receives the most powerful support in ful lling their obligations. What is a coronation for a ruler is a baptism or a wedding for an ordinary man, and Easter falls precisely among that group of holidays when, after the longest period of lent in the Christian calendar, Serbs prefer to marry or baptise their new- born o spring. Folk beliefs also claim that this time of year is the ideal time to pass away, because Easter allegedly guarantees direct passage into heaven, regardless of the past “deeds” in life.
