W hen it comes to opera or ballet, the Nation- al Theatre has the biggest spectacles on its repertoire, and its orchestra and choir enjoy a high reputation as authorities of music. The magnificent hall shows its best side in the evenings when performances include Verdi’s La Traviata, Mozart’s Magic Flute, Marriage of Figaro, Don Quixote, and Giselle etc. Behind these projects are some of the greatest Serbi- an artists, but there are also artists from across the world, and apart from the classics, this stage has also seen the premiere performances of some modern works, such as the ballet Queen Margot set to the music of Goran Brego- vić, and Who’s Singin’ Over There, a ballet inspired by the cult Serbian film of the same name, set to the music of Vo- jislav Voki Kostić. Opera has been present on the stage of the national theatre since the late 19 th century, while the ballerinas of the Belgrade ballet first appeared there in the early 20 th century.
