The festival actually originated as an act of rebellion during the difficult 1990s, striving to present creations that are small in terms of production and created far away from major film studies. FAF thereby revealed not only new authors, but also new film styles, genres and cinematography, which are sometimes difficult to access, even in today’s time of the internet revolution. A view into the world, which this festival has sought to provide since its very inception, has actually remained as its trademark, because each year this festival enables us to discover something in the film world that’s seemingly minor and separate. That will be the case again this year. Shoplifters is a special ode to the family that has brought Cannes Palme d’Or victory to Ja- pan after a gap of more than two decades and the then triumph of director Shohei Imamu- ra, who shared his prize equally with Iranian Abbas Kiarostami – the first winning for the film The Eel, the second for the work Taste of Cherry. And both of those achievements remain remembered to this day. Judging by reactions from Cannes, Hirokazu Kore’eda’s film will also be prove unforgettable – with this author constantly seeking the roots and causes of alienation among members of fam- ily collectives. The film Shoplifters in its title already suggests a word that’s almost non-ex- istent in Japanese, which gives additional in- trigue to the plot itself. And the action of this film, which is characterised as a crime drama, revolves around a socially vulnerable family living in existential threat in the suburbs of Tokyo. They function as petty thieves in or- der to survive, and after one such theft they

stivalska platna. Tako će biti i ove go- dine od 23. do 30. novembra, kada će se FAF održati na dosad najviše loka- cija i ponuditi raznovrstan program sa najznačajnijih filmskih festivala. Ako se po jutru dan poznaje, kanski pobed- nik svakako najavljuje velike ambicije koje FAF ima uoči sopstvenog jubile- ja – četvrt veka postojanja. A festival je i nastao iz bunta to- kom teških devedesetih, sa težnjom da prikazuje ta produkciono mala ostvare- nja, napravljena daleko od veliki film- skih studija. Tako je FAF otkrivao ne samo autore već i nove filmske stilo- ve, žanrove i kinematografije, do ko- jih je ponekad teško doći, čak i danas, u vremenu internet revolucije. Pogled u svet, koji je od samih početaka Festi- val autorskog filma sugerisao, zapravo je ostao njegov zaštitni znak, jer upra- vo na tom festivalu, svake godine bez premca, otkrijemo nešto što je u film- skom svetu naizgled sitno i apartno. If the day can be recognised by the quality of the morning, opening with the winner of Cannes certainly confirms FAF’s great am- bitions on the eve of its own silver jubilee of 25 years of existence.
