Košutnjak extends over an area of 330 hectares, at an elevation of 250 metres above sea-level. Once a closed royal hunt- ing grounds, it was supposedly named af- ter red deer. Today, unfortunately, there are no more deer, but among its canopies one can identify about 30 species of bird. Protected as a monument of nature and a favourite area of leisure and relaxation for Belgraders, it also houses the ‘Pionirski Grad’ [Pioneer City] sports and recreation centre, with pitches and swimming pools, the Film City studios, a ski slope etc. At the foot of the hill is the legendary Hajduk Fountain, dating back to the 18th centu- ry, which is one of the oldest with natural spring water. It was near here that Prince Mihailo Obrenović was assassinated in 1868, giving Košutnjak additional impor- tance as an historical site.
