ZELENI VENAC GREEN WREATH
Kad vidite po centru grada žene kojima iz finih poslovnih torbi miriše sveže voće, vero- vatno su usput prošle kroz Ze- leni venac. Svi putevi ukrštaju se na pijaci smeštenoj u samom srcu grada okićenoj karakteri- stičnim kariranim krovovima. Titulu kraljice među pijacama ipak nije dobila samo zbog do- bre pozicije. Svečano otvorena 1926. godine, bila je to najmo- dernija tržnica u gradu, sa sjaj- nom organizacijom i od počet- ka se postavila kao jedna od njegovih prepoznatljivih tača- ka. I danas igra na tu kartu – re- konstruisana, natkrivena i mo- derno opremljena, spremna da odgovori na sve potrebe savre- menog kupca ili slučajnog pro- laznika. Nažalost, to ju je ko- štalo onog starinskog šarma i komšijske ljubaznosti.
When you see a woman smelling fresh flowers from her briefcase in the city centre, you can as- sume that they probably walked through the Zele- ni Venac (Green Wreath) market on their way to work. All roads meet at Zeleni Venac, the market located in the very heart of the city, decorated by characteristic checked rooftops. However, it didn’t gain the title of “queen among markets” due on- ly to its good location. Officially opened in 1926,
it was then the city’s most modern market, with great organisation, and from the start became one of Belgrade’s recognisable landmarks. And today it also plays this ‘card’ – reconstructed, covered and modern-equipped, it is again ready to respond to every need of modern consumers or accidental passers-by. Unfortunately, reconstruction came at the cost of its antique charm and neighbourhood friendliness...
