Tekst / Words: Željka Mrđa

Local and international artists who are both emotionally and globally engaged bring many voices and many themes to Belgrade’s October Salon from 15 th September to 28 th October. In this sea of voices, the unique melody of the contemporary world art scene will be heard

Svetski i domaći umetnici emotivno i globalno angažovani donose svako svoj glas i svako svoju temu.

T he so-called Superflat pictures of Takashi Murakami, cur- rently the brightest star in the art world, works by Yoko Ono, who is coming to Serbia for the first time, paintings by Anselm Kiefer and Vladimir Veličković, the sculptures of Ivana Bašić, which suggest exhausted fragile bodies, Katarina Zdjelar’s video works dealing with feminine identity, American art- ist Ian Cheng’s virtual ecosystem, conceived as an endless video game, and the Pop art collages of postmodern Icelandic artist Er- ró – these are just some of the artworks through which today’s most important artists are describing and experiencing the world. They will be presented at Belgrade’s 57 th October Salon, this year entitled ‘The Marvellous Cacophony’ from 15 th September to 28 th October. Art historian Gunnar B. Kvaran, director of Astrup Fearn- ley Museum in Oslo, and Daniel Kvaran, curator at Reykjavik Art Museum, are the curators. They decided to include in the title the word“cacophony”, a term that often has negative connotations, in order to express the noisy diversity of movements and approaches that give the international contemporary art scene its unique tone. “We live in very exciting times, with different things happen- ing in different places. We live in a general cacophony. There isn’t any single school or movement that dominates in contempo- rary art. This is about fragments and different processes, and all of that comprises the diversity that we want to bring to the ex- hibition, with an abundance of new phenomena”, says Gunnar, explaining the aesthetics of this year’s selection.
