WORLD FALLS IN LOVE WITH

POLO SHIRTS

The roaring ‘20s, the time of jazz and flapper dresses, also brought innovations to Wimbledon. French tennis player Suzanne Lenglen took to the court with bear arms and a knee-length skirt. She also wore a headband, as that was characteristic of the time. Her appearance was such that it caused a serious stir in public. It was the creation of French fashion designer Jean Patou. This decade also gave us one of the most famous fashion houses – La- coste, which was founded by French tennis player Rene Lacoste. His lightweight breathable T-shirts, now known as polo shirts, began being mass pro- duced in 1933.

PLEATED SKIRTS, WELCOME

The 1950s were marked by pronounced waists, decorated cardigans and pleated skirts. Maureen Connolly wore a short pleated skirt that for generations to come would remain the archetypal tennis skirt. Following his retirement, British tennis player Fred Perry launched his

namesake brand. 1950.

CORSET ON CLAY

1940.

The extremely feminine clothing worn by Gertrude Moran at Wimbledon in 1949 was an introduction to the trends brought to us by the‘50s. In a top decorated with frills, a short skirt and undershorts with lace edg- es that peeked out as she played, she drew the atten- tion of the public and photographers. Her outfit was created by British couturier Ted Tinling.

PORUB DALEKO IZNAD KOLENA

HEM FAR ABOVE

THE KNEE

U modu ulaze aerodinamične tu- nike i kanafas desen. Engleske igra- čice Virdžinija Vejd i Lorna Grevil Kolins nose šortseve u ovom dese- nu. Odbačena je moda pedesetih i mini-suknje konačno ulaze na teren. Porub se penje iznad kolena.

This decade saw aerodynamic tu- nics and canvas come into fashion. English players Virginia Wade and Lor- na Greville-Collins wore shorts dur- ing this decade. The fashion of the ‘50s was abandoned and mini-skirts finally took to the court, with hems climbing above the knee.
