Road project, which also includes Belgrade. This year saw Belgrade’s mayor sign protocol agreements in Beijing on coop- eration in the construction of a Chinese industrial park that will be located in the zone alongside Belgrade’s Mihajlo Pupin Bridge, as well as on the completion of the sewage network on the territory of the city and the construction of a wastewater treat- ment plant. Mali noted at the time that this would be the largest industrial park in this part of Europe, where thousands of jobs will be created. Additionally, May- or Mali later signed in Belgrade a Memo- randum of Understanding for the project to construct a heating pipeline connect- ing Obrenovac to New Belgrade. - These are investments with values measured in the hundreds of millions of euros, which we will implement as of next year. Likewise, the project to modernise the Belgrade-Budapest railway is of huge impor- tance and will enable easier networking of people and transport of goods not only in this part of Europe, but also wider, and we expect the construction of this line to start by the end of this year – highlighted Mayor Mali. Chinese companies are already build- ing the Belgrade bypass, which is a huge- ly significant infrastructure project, just as they built Mihajlo Pupin Bridge. It is also important to develop tourist cooperation. The day prior to the start of this event, the first direct flight from Belgrade to Beijing via Prague was established, but without trans- ferring planes, which brought the first 20 businessmen from China that day. That’s also precisely why city leaders expect even more Chinese tourists, though that number isn’t small already. In the first six months of this year alone, the number of tourists from China increased by 135% compared to last year. Info boards were recently in- stalled in Belgrade that are, among other languages, also in Chinese, and Mali notes that Serbia is the only country in Europe to have cancelled visas for Chinese citizens. - The potential of our tourist coopera- tion is huge. Belgrade is slowly becoming a “hub”of the region, and tourists from China who visit Belgrade also visit other attractions in our country and the region. This stimu- lates the city’s economic development and revives it. This summer you could hear on every corner the murmuring of tourists, who always have only words of praise for our city – says Mayor Mali for Elevate. Returning to the start, Belgrade was the first European city to sign an agree- ment on cooperation with Beijing 37 years ago, and today that position has returned. The city is opening up to the east and to the west, seeking to attract investors and tourists from all meridians.

organised for him and his delegation at the Dva jelena Restaurant in Skadarlija. On that occasion, the man at the helm of the Chinese capital made an entry on his impressions in the guestbook that is still preserved at this famous tavern. Belgrade was so important to Beijing back then that the Serbian capital was the first city in Europe with which a Co- operation Agreement was signed. What was on the menu that day is un- known, but what is known is that 37 years later the current mayor of Beijing, Chen Jining, samples Serbian kajmak milk curd, and ajvar pepper chutney, and for dessert – homemade cherry pie. Mayor Jining was

To podstiče i privredni razvoj grada i oživljava ga.

delighted with the Serbian specialities and old-fashioned city music, and his host, Bel- grade Mayor Siniša Mali, showed him the guestbook which included the entry made almost four decades ago by the then may- or of the Chinese capital. Lunch was just a break within the framework of the Days of Beijing in Bel- grade event, which was held for the first time this September. The Mayors had numerous joint activities – a meeting and joint sign- ing of seven agreements in various fields; the opening of the Charming Beijing exhi- bition at Kalemegdan, in front of the Cvi- jeta Zuzorić pavilion; an economic forum with more than 80 participating Chinese companies; a hockey game between Ser- bian and Chinese teams, and for the finale – the Beijing Symphony orchestra, which performed at the Sava Centre. During this weekend, Mayor Mali was the proud host of his counterpart from Beijing, who was de- lighted, as he said, with beautiful Belgrade. There is a long tradition of coopera- tion between the two cities, but to date its potential has not been sufficiently exploit- ed. China is developing at a tremendous pace and has an extremely strong econ- omy, but has also launched the new Silk
