O TOKIJU
A lthough Pierre de Coubertin said that it’s more important to take part than to win, the world’s best athletes will be coming to Tokyo to triumph in the Olympics. Nobody wants to be just an observer. Of course, it won’t be easy for them in the slightest, but there is still plenty of time until the Olympic torch is ocially ignited. That’s why the article in front of you won’t be dedicated to those who will play the lead roles in Tokyo, rather to those who give their all to ensure that the lead actors will only need to care about their results when they emerge on the big stage. Let’s start from the beginning … This Japanese city was ocially selected to host the 2020 Olympics in Buenos Aires on 7 th September 2013, beating o the challenges of Madrid and Istanbul. This will be the second time that Tokyo will host the Games (the rst being in 1964). Of course, you need to know before you apply that you will not be paid for this job and that you will need to secure your own accommodation in Japan. You will receive food and a uniform from organisers. The mascots are already known, and were cho- sen – believe it or not – by ve million chil- dren from Japan. The nal selections were Miraitowa – the ocial mascot of the 2020 Summer Olympics – and Someity, the o- cial mascot of the 2020 Summer Paralympics. The name Miraitowa was created by combining the Japanese words for the future and eternity. Both mascots represent a combination of tradition and inno- vation. The choice of the ocial logo has been dogged by numerous controversies. Victory – after 14,599 pro- posals – went to designer Asao Tokolo, who designed a ring-shaped logo that has a chessboard motif with three varieties of indigo blue rectangular shapes that symbolise countries and cultures. Now, we all know that Japan leads the way in inno- vations related to energy saving, which is why organ- isers will use wind power and solar energy to power stadiums and other ancillary facilities. Everything will be recycled and reused following the culmination of the Olympics. Japan is currently testing kilometres of new roadways in Tokyo that contain solar panels over which a special protective material is placed to ena- vations related isers will use wind stadiums and other ancillary be recycled and reused following the culmination that you will not be paid for this job and that you mascots sen – believe it or not Summer Olympics – and the Japanese words for mascots represent a combination of vation.
