Don’t let it worry you if you don’t hear or see it on TV. A new generation of pop-rock musi- cians has emerged in Macedonia that is do- ing very interesting things. And jazz musi- cians are already organising themselves well and even forming their own big bands. And we need not even mention the MK Philhar- monic, which has a new hall and has expand- ed its repertoire with many contemporary music trends and happenings. You’ve said that the Beatles taught you everything. Do you still think there’s no better music than that which they played? - If you mean in terms of pop and rock music, they created so much that, after them,

- I rarely speak to Stochelo, but I believe I’ll see him at the upcoming Festival. Of course I miss the Kings of Strings, and I’d like us to get together again, at least for one concert. Tommy also admitted to me that he miss- es our company. Your previous album, Mother Tongue, actually returned you to simplicity, but also to your roots. Is there good music that exists today in Macedonia, Serbia and the Balkans generally? - At rst glance, simple things appear to be the toughest. I accepted a risk with that album and managed to ll halls with just one guitar. Try for yourself and you’ll see how simple that is... Yes, great music exists.

it’s impossible to be new, innovative, inspired and creative. Of course, I don’t mean to undermine anything that came before and after them, but that amount of creativity and inspiration in such a short period of time is a cosmic phenomenon. Their songbook stands beside an armchair in my living room, as a reminder. Who do you rate as the world’s best gui- tarist? - The best guitarist in the world is that little 10-year-old boy whose nose is stuck to the win- dow display of the instrument shop and who yearns to receive some instrument he’s seen. Yearning and passion make you the best. And those who act like they have greatness, they no longer have any juice, they squeezed themselves dry long ago, ghting with the world, with show business, private problems and personal vanity... Last, but by no means least: Prilep, Skop- je, Kruševo... If you were to invite guests to these cities, what would you say; why should they come? - For years I’ve been inviting a friend of mine from Slovenia to visit Macedonia. He was in Ti- bet, in London, in Thailand, in America, in India, in search of music and spiritual growth. But if London is a metropolis of world pop music, and New York is the centre for modern jazz, Mace- donia could be the best place to discover the best traditions of Balkan music, with due respect given to the music of all nations and music per- formed around here. But you can’t speak about magic, it must be felt, and here there’s an over- abundance of that...
