Rijeka is perfectly connected with all Istrian cities, which is another reason not to put o a trip to Opatija, Pula, Rovinj, Poreč or Umag odlažete izlet do Opatije, Pule, Rovinja, Poreča ili Umaga Rijeka je odlično povezana sa svim gradovima Istre, što je razlog više da ne

P assion for the written word and trav- el inspired Tara Đukić to launch the portal Insp.rs, where she’s both an editor and one of the most read au- thors. When she’s not working and writing, she adores travelling. As our guide through Rijeka, she admits at the very start that the city got under her skin at rst sight, and that she always gladly returns to the Rijeka coast whenever the chance arises. She loves Rije- ka specically because it unites in one place an impressive cultural, artistic and histori- cal heritage of a diverse variety of nations, religions and languages, without any kind of animosity. “Here one feels a special peace in the air that creates the art of living. That’s why there are those many great artists who, even after life in major world cities, returned to Rijeka, such as Rade Šerbedžija and Mira Furlan,”says Tara, who is heading out on this walk with the sun, coee and the seagulls of the Riva Boduli. “From the Riva it’s best to head down Za- grebačka Street to the picturesque Rijeka mar- ketplace, where you can best feel the murmur- ings and energy of this city’s inhabitants. Then you choose - down by the Riva or up to Trsat and the walls of the fortress, which have 600 steps to be reached, but that’s nothing com- pared to the magnicent view of the whole city and the bay that awaits you at the top.” We’ve already mentioned the colourful- ness of Rijeka’s architecture, which has only continued and been upgraded throughout the centuries, but there was still one former world power that left the most marks on this city’s history... “Also dominant is Austro-Hungarian ar- chitecture, which leaves the impression that Rijeka itself is one large museum, where you stand on every corner to get a good look at its buildings, most of which are under UNES- CO protection. It is largely for this reason that Rijeka will next year be the capital of Europe- an culture, which only conrms that it’s a lit- erary, artistic, cultural and historical hub. We’ll start with the Croatian National Theatre, the priceless interior of which was painted by Gus- tav and Ernst Klimt. Then there’s the Maritime

and Historical Museum of the Croatian Litto- ral, which contains the only surviving life jack- et from the Titanic. It is not well known that the rescue ship was the Carpathia, which was voyaging from Rijeka to New York. On the other side, Rijeka is lled with hid- den places that you have to explore for your- self. There are plenty of antiques shops and private bookshops, the most famous of which is Ex Libris. Then there’s the Orthodox Church of St. Nikola, which seemingly appears out of nowhere in a small alley, when you head from the Riva towards Uri, and looks magnicent. “The most beautiful views of the blue waters of the Adriatic are oered from the Riva and its extension – the Riva Boduli. Lo- cated there is the Mornar restaurant, where you can enjoy your favourite local speciali- tie, and the view overlooking the harbour. Next follows dessert at the Cacao cake shop, which is famous for its top sweets. Opposite the steps leading to Trsat, there is the famous Rijeka restaurant Nebuloza. Here you can take a rest from long walks and, with a tuna risot- to or sirloin steak, recount your experienc- es and anecdotes. Lovers of Italian cuisine must nd the hidden and colourful tavern Maslina, where the best pizza in the city is served. And prosecco is sipped on the ter- race of some hundred-year-old building on the seashore, with some dear person beside you – toasting such a life,”saysTara, conclud- ing her fairy-tale story. This Paris of the Adriatic, as she describes Rijeka, is well connected with the Croatian coast’s other gems, making it an ideal start- ing point for excursions to other cities locat- ed nearby. Rijeka is perfectly connected with all Is- trian cities, which is another reason not to put o a trip to Opatija, Pula, Rovinj, Poreč or Um- ag. From the monastery of Opatija to the mag- ical Rovinj, each of these cities hides a unique story that’s worth discovering. The magic of Rijeka doesn’t end when the sun sets over the water, rather only con- tinuing when you choose some of Rijeka’s fa- mous restaurants, where you can taste tradi- tional specialities and international cuisine.
