The sea might well be the heart of the Bay of Kotor, but its soul cannot be separated from the heights, from the surrounding mountains, its guardians - Orjen and Lovćen. In order to truly get acquainted with 'Boka' you have to explore it on foot, step by step, reaching its mysterious peaks, vantage points, hidden fortresses, caves, atypical mountain reliefs and hear the continuous and noisy songs of birds in pristine nature. of which represent the legacy of old mariners. The Bay of Kotor has a great many hiking and mountaineering routes, interesting rises, wonderful vantage points. Some of the routes are tough and strenuous, requiring excellent fitness and strong will, and I also strive to one day tour them. Until then, however, I'm satisfied with some of those I've already hiked that are less strenuous, yet still cover attractive landscapes. My base was Herceg Novi, so I primar- ily embarked on getting acquaint- ed with the rocky Orjen, a moun- tain that stands like a crown over this old, coastal town. This is a mini
guide to five attractions and hiking tours that you should give a chance to if you're heading for 'Boka', and which you can nonetheless conquer relatively easily. The trails on Orjen are well marked, so there's no fear that you will lose your way. Howev- er, arm yourself with an internet connection on your phone, because Google maps are essential for you to reach the start of the trails by car – they mostly start in the village of Kameno or from the place known locally as Borići. QUAINTED WITH, AND THEN fall in love with, all the splendid beauty of the Bay of Kotor and its whimsical nature, you have to view it from the heights – from the mountain. It isn't enough to tour its coastal area, to stroll along the cobblestones of its old towns, to buy a bouquet of mimosa, sample home-made prosciutto, cheese in oil, strong 'loza' grape brandy or home-made juice made from wild rose hip, which thrives here like a weed, to admire the clear sky from concrete jetties and rocky coves while enjoying Boka's magnifi- cent churches and palaces, many
