Since this film was released in 1961, mil- lions of women have afforded themselves the ‘guiltypleasure’ofhavingtheirbreakfast-at-Tif- fany’s moment, and there is no reason why you shouldn’t be one of them. However, shopping certainly isn’t the only reason why tourists from all over the world flock to Fifth Avenue. One of its parts, specifically the area from 82 nd Street to 105 th Street on the Upper East Side, in the Carneg- ie Hill neighbourhood, is known as Museum Mile, despite actually being slightly longer than a mile. This part of Fifth Avenue con- tains one of the largest art collections an- ywhere in the world, located in ten muse- ums. We’llmentiononly

Fifth Avenue at the top of your list of must-vis- it destinations, you should add breath-tak- ing architecture to your list of reasons. From the New York Public Library, which boasts over 53 million publications, via the Rocke- feller Center, to St Patrick’s Cathedral, the ne- ogothic Catholic church at the very heart of Fifth Avenue – all these edifices are located on Fifth Avenue and appear as though they were designed to shooting selfies. One destination you certainly should skip is the world-renowned Empire State Building, which even today rightly carries the epitaph of one of the seven wonders of the modern world. Although this is a sky- scraper that was the world’s tallest building

until 1972, it is interesting to notethatevenNewYorkers themselves were amazed at the speed at which this architectural wonder al- most “sprouted up over- night” in the middle of “The Big Apple”. Specif- ically, the Empire State Building was construct- ed in just 450 days, with around 3,500 workers building an average of four floors per week. It was there that Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan met, it’s the building climbed by King Kong... And all that’s just the beginning... The most

famous hotel located on Fifth Avenue is cer-

tainly The Plaza. Its long history began as far back as 1890, although the original building was demolished and a new one was only built on the same site two decades later. During the past century, this building – constructed in the style of a French Renaissance chateau – has been owned and renovated by several owners, the most famous of which are certain- ly Conrad Hilton and Donald Trump. The Pla- za became a cult hotel on Fifth Avenue due, among other things, to the performances of numerous major stars in its Persian Room, in- cluding Liza Minnelli, Marlene Dietrich and Peggy Lee, while Miles Davis also recorded a live album in this room in 1958. The prestige of the hotel has also been confirmed by its famous guests, as was the case with the Bea- tles, who stayed here during their 1964 visit to New York, and – according to witnesses – they took all the coat hangers with them. This hotel has also been immortalised in art, by being mentioned on the pages of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, while some of the scenes of the film North by North- west were shot here, as were many Ameri- can TV series.

Bitlsi su tokom turneje 1964. iz čuvenog hotela Plaza odneli sve ofingere The Beatles, who stayed here during their 1964 tour, took all the coat hangers with them

the Metropolitan, with its impressive collec- tion of over two million artefacts, including magnificent examples of paintings dating back to the Egyptian and Hellenistic periods, via greats like Titsian, Vermeer, Velázquez or Manet, all the way to exhibits in the fields of sculpture and applied arts. You also shouldn’t overlook the Goethe Institute, the National Academy Museum and School, the Jewish Museum and the Africa Centre, while per- haps your choice will actually be the Gug- genheim, famous for having the largest gal- lery of abstract art, with an emphasis on the work of Wassily Kandinsky. If you neverthe- less opt for MoMa, apart from being literally dumbstruck when faced with the scenes of Van Gogh’s Starry Night, Salvador Dali’s Per- sistence of Memory, or Frida Kahlo’s self-por- trait, you might be fortunate enough to arrive at this museum during one of its cult perfor- mances, as was the case with those who got the chance to sit opposite Marina Abramo- vić during her 736-hour performance “The Artist Is Present”. If you still have a dilemma about placing
