Relatively small, with just half a million residents, it is ranked highly on many lists of top world destinations. And even though it is known as Rubens’ City, the city of diamonds, once Europe’s largest port city, and although all tourist brochures include inev- itable photographs of its sumptuous Grote Markt, the city’s main ‘Great Market’ square, and the stunningly beautiful Cogels Osylei street, here we talk about Antwerp as a capital of fashion. Oh yes, because it was recently ranked 11 th on the list of the world’s 50 most important fashion cities. Discover: This status didn’t come overnight, but the revolution took place during the 1980s, when a group of influential Antwerp designers from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts presented their fashion ideas to the world. Among the most prominent are Ann Demeulemeester, Dries Van Noten and Dirk Bikkembergs. A further step in the promotion of the city was made by the T-shirts of Demna Gvasalia that carry the name Antwerp, which were completely sold out when they appeared last year, and the slightly earlier sweatshirts with stylised inscriptions of Belgium and Antwerp by Raf Simons, which were also worn by Kanye West. Discover: The cool part of the city is Het Zuid, something akin to Belgrade’s Savamala district, with numerous galleries and design- er boutiques. And if you think you cannot find your way in all this clothing – the Tourist Bureau also has a fashion map of Antwerp. Try: The cult Antwerp biscuit in the shape of a hand at Philip’s Biscuits. Trebaće vam i jedno i drugo. With over 125 breweries producing more than 1,000 types of beer, Belgium is the Bordeaux of beer. However, we are not talking about quantity, with the Belgian beer production accounting for only one per cent of the world’s total production; it is about diver- sity, water quality and the entrepreneurial spirit of beer lovers who experiment, but also almost religiously respect tradition. It is be- cause of all of this that Belgian beer is included on the UNESCO Cul- tural Heritage List. If you head along the beer routes from Flanders to Wallonia, you will find that in Flanders “cheers”is expressed as “proost” and in Wallonia is “santé”. You will need both. Try: An obligatory part of the list are Trappist beers; those are beers produced in monasteries, with only 10 brewers worldwide hav- ing the right to name their beverages as such. Of those 10, six are in Belgium.
Pogledajte: U Katedrali Svetog Bava nalaze se dva najbolja dela velikih flamanskih slikara – Van Ajkov Gentski oltar i Ru- bensovo Preobraćanje Svetog Bava . Probajte: Posle duge šetnje zagrejaće vas waterzoii , pileća ili riblja krem-supa. Nowhere near as well-known as Bruges, Ghent remains off the radar for most tourists. That’s why it is dubbed the best- kept secret of Belgium (and Europe). It might have been ne- glected in comparison to Bruges, but Ghent is richer in terms of lavish architecture and buildings and, just like Bruges, is on the UNESCO List of Cultural Heritage sites. Tour: The city’s landmarks are St. Bavo’s Cathedral, St. Nicho- las’ Church and the palace in Graslei, which are reflected in the River Leie during the day and become a canvas for the dance of light and shadows during the evening. Enjoy: The most beautiful feature of the city is in this dance. Every day when the sun sets, thousands of lamps are lit across the city, according to the concept of lighting done by the de- signer Roland Jéol. Which city other than Ghent could organise the Festival of Light? Every January, the city is transformed into an even more beautiful fairy tale… if that is even possible. See: In St. Bavo’s Cathedral are the two best works of great Flemish painters - Van Icke’s Ghent Altarpiece and Rubens’The Conversion of St. Bavo. Try: After a long stroll, you can warm up with Waterzooi, a creamy chicken or fish stew.
