guests from abroad, and that the city is live- lier than ever before – says Belgrade’s mayor. Belgrade had a special glisten this win- ter. Numerous ice rinks, the Street of the Open Heart event, the Square of Fairy Tales, New Year’s Eve concerts, “Christmas villag- es by the Temple” – all of these contribut- ed to Belgraders and tourists experiencing the magic of the New Year holidays. They say that Belgrade has never looked more beautiful. A special attraction in the city were the Dundu dolls. This German artis- tic troupe, which has performed at theatre and music festivals around the world, offi- cially opened the New Year’s programme within the framework of the project “Bel- grade Winter”. - We tried to provide adequate con- tent both for our youngest residents and the eldest. We had great programmes for the youth, but also organised a “pension- ers’ ball”, which met with a nice response from Belgrade’s older citizens. I am proud of Belgrade today; a Belgrade that has no boundaries; a Belgrade that’s open to every- one. We’ve launched a process that can no longer be stopped - says Mayor Mali. Belgrade last year attracted 20 per more foreign tourists and overnight stays, and dur- ing the New Year celebrations the city cen- tre hotels were all booked to capacity, de- spite their number having increased by 50 per cent compared to 2013.

York Times described the Serbian capital, which it ranked among 52 destinations that should be visited this year. The list specifi- cally recommends some new parts of Bel- grade, stating that“the abandoned area be- side the River Sava has been transformed into a promenade flanked by cafés and food kiosks”. Other media publications around the world also had words of praise for Belgrade this winter, and speaking to Elevate, the city’s first man, Siniša Mali, says that he thinks tourists have actually breathed new life in- to Belgrade. - Belgrade is a city that tour-

I don’t think they have high ex- pectations prior to arriving, pri- marily due to the turbulent his- tory of the city, and then they are pleasantly surprised when they see the architecture and the older parts of the city, such as Kalemegdan, but also the newer parts, such as the Bel-
