THEATRE Tekst / Words: Ana Kalaba Fotografije / Photography: Predrag Ilić, Dah teatar, Promo BEZ GRANICA LE STUDIO LE STUDIO WITHOUT BORDERS Belgrade’s theatre season is opened each year by the prestigious BITEF (Belgrade International Theatre Festival), which provides a review of new creative approaches to theatre from around the world, setting new challenges – both for prestigious Belgrade theatres and for the alternative scene. This alternative scene seems to provide even more room to explore theatrical expression, more freedom to experiment, more topics for engagement etc. And here’s what that looks like in the Serbian capital
L e Studio Theatre was co-founded by French theatre di- rector Jean-Baptiste Demarigny and Serbian scenogra- pher Sanja Maljković, modelled on the French theatre culture of alternative hidden theatres. Le Studio is “hid- den” in a seemingly deserted industrial building in Poenkareo- va Street, and the interior isn’t standard either – the audience sits on armchairs, couches, chairs, while there is almost no dis- tance between them and the stage. The selection of plays is such that it leaves room for improvisation at various levels - the cur- rent repertoire includes the comedy The Odd Couple, Tom Wait’s art musical Woyzeck, the drama Perseverance, the cabaret show Chicago etc. And when the curtains fall a party starts, at which the performance team socialises with the audience in a relaxed atmosphere.
