2 PRIVATNA

We’ve all heard of Hawaii, the Maldives and the Seychelles, while the Azores remain a well-hidden secret from tourists. Their residents protest against the introduction of new flights and don’t like the idea of tourists picking endemic flowers and mak- ing a noise. It can happen that, while walking along the forests trails you won’t come across anyone for hours.

3 SPAVANJE U KRATERU SLEEPING IN A CRATER

If the Atlantic dried up, the Azores would be the world’s highest mountain, and the island of Pico’s eponymous volca- no, Ponta do Pico, is Portugal’s highest peak (2,351m). The vol- cano completely dominates the small island and is a subject of admiration for the small number of tourists and residents of surrounding villages. You can climb to the top of Pico, which of- fers views of the other islands, in four hours. A treat is camp- ing overnight in a crater with a diameter of 700 metres.

On the island of Terseira is one of the rare volcanoes that you can enter – by stairs. Nine- ty metres deep in the womb of the dormant Algar do Carvão (Cavern of Coal) you will find tunnels forged by lava, absolute silence and the only ray of light that comes through a small “chimney” – the entrance to the volcano.

EARTH’S CENTRE

Whale hunting was banned in the Azores more than 30 years ago. What has remained are observation posts, the odd retired whaler and 27 different types of whales for which the Azores are home. Measuring up to 20 metres in length, they are most active in spring, when they court and mate, and it is not ra- re to see entire families. During an excursion by boat you can see up to six different species in one day.
