Medina. The year has 12 months, and the most important is the ninth one, the holy month of Ramadan. When you finally step inside, barefoot (removing shoes is oblig- atory), you will step from the cold marble onto the largest handmade carpet in the world. It took more than 1,000 people two years to weave in Iran, using the best wool from New Zealand and 30 per cent cotton, and covers an unbelievable area of 5,700 square metres. Weighing 35 tonnes, it was brought in parts and then con- nected in such a way that not even a single stitch can be seen. And, as if that wasn’t impres- sive enough, when you look up you will see the largest chandelier that exists in any mosque in the world. Made in Germany using a million Swarovski crystals imported from Austria, it weighs an astonishing 12 tonnes, and is flanked to its left and right by two slightly smaller chande- liers of identical design, which serve as reflection. Opposite the entrance, on the so-called Qibla wall – the main and most important wall that the mosque has, and which indicates the direc- tion of Mecca – you will find anoth- er imaginative creation: a hundred flowers presented in a mosaic. In 99 of them are printed the qualities of Allah, while in the centre is a flower that represents the sun. In it is writ- ten the name of God, while above an empty place has been set aside. Nothing is written in this flower for two reasons. One reason is that noth- ing can stand above the name of Al- lah, while the other reason is the be- lief that the most important word will be discovered by every believ- er at the time of judgment. All flow- ers have five petals, which signify the five principles of Islam. And although the great Sheikh Zayed did not see his magical crea- tion completed, he rests beside it in a place that cannot be approached. He is accompanied 24 hours a day, every day of the year, by volunteers who take turns in reading from this holy book. You can hear constant, soft chanting of verses from the Quran…
