RITAM GRADA RHYTHM OF THE TOWN N ajnoviji savski most je za samo pet go- dina postao jedan od simbola grada. T he latest bridge across the Sava has become one of the biggest symbols of the city in just five years. It is interesting that the first sketches of Belgrade with a bridge over Ada Ciganlija were drafted in 1923 by architect Đorđe Kovaljevski. However, we only welcomed this mag- nificent structure in 2011. And that was as one of the architectural wonders. Harvard-educated architect Danny Forster dubbed it revolutionary because it was the first time in his- tory that it was envisaged for a bridge of this size to be carried by only one pillar. That pillar, or py- lon, is 198 metres tall, with a width of 1.5 metres at the top and 16 metres at the bottom, and is held by 80 angled cables. The 580-metre-long bridge is al- so special because of its asymmetry – the pylon is not in the middle, so the balance problem was re- solved by the “legs” being made of different mate- rials. All parts were made manually and on the spot, which meant that Belgraders could monitor the en- tire construction process. And then, when the bridge was opened, they also gave it a name - a survey was conducted and showed that the most popular name was “Ada Bridge”.
