BRANKOV MOST POSTAMENTI KAO SVEDOČANSTVO LEPOTE BRANKO’S BRIDGE: PEDESTALS AS A TESTIMONY TO BEAUTY

Moćni postamenti, koji nose i današnji most, svedoče o njegovoj lepoti.

B ranko’s Bridge is certainly the first bridge that crosses the minds of Belgraders whenever bridg- es are mentioned, given that it connects the city centre with New Belgrade and Zemun. The main mystery linked to this bridge relates to its name. You can often hear the story that the Branko after which the bridge is named was the writer Branko Ćopić, who committed suicide in 1984 by jumping from this bridge. However, the truth is that this bridge “inherited” its name from Brankova Street, which it connects to and, which is named after the poet Branko Radičević. There is also the official name it was given when it first opened for traffic in 1956: Bridge of Brotherhood and Unity, but that name never became popular. And before all that, way back in 1934, the same place was the site of the mag- nificent King Alexander Suspension Bridge, which was destroyed during World War II before it was even fully completed. Despite that, it is said to have been an archi- tectural masterpiece and, in terms of appearance, even the modern Ada Bridge would not be able to compete with it. The powerful pedestals that bear the weight of the existing bridge stand as testimony to its beauty.
