Rotherham’s translation o f John 3:8, “ The wind bloweth where it listeth,” is : “The Spirit where it pleaseth, doth breathe.” I —-o— Faith receives Christ as God’s Gift (Jn. 1 :12) ; relies on Him as a personal Savior (2 Tim. 1 :12) ; arid renounces all for Him as Lord (Phil. 3:8). —o— WThree L’s for the “Christian: 1. Light Of .the world (Mt. 5:14; Phil; 2:15). 2. Live godly in .the world (Titus 2:12). 3, Love not the world (1 Jn. 2:16; 2 Tim. 4: 10). I Here is a new, and striking translation of an old text: “They looked unto Him,

and were radiant.” How gloriously true is this! When Moses was with God he acquired the radiant face. “He wist not that it shone,” but the people saw it and; were filled with wonder, —o-1— “ Long-suffering” in Gal._ 5:22 means “long-temperedness.” ; It -is the Chris tian’s broad shoulders on which he bears all things. It is love’s disposition. —o— i The first recorded instance o f out- Handing faith in the New Testament (Matt. 8:10-12. Cf. Mk. 6 : 6 ). Luke’s genealogy is that of Mary> though it appears to be that o f Joseph to those unfamiliar with the Jewish reckon ing by acknowledged heads of families. The term son-in-law had not been in-' vented in Bible days and the term son was used uniformly to cover this rela tionship. When Joseph is called the son of Heli it means the son-in-law o f Heli and the. genealogy points with unerring finger to Mary, the mother o f Jesus. Dr. Morgan points out that Mary her self was the first one to question the pos sibility of the Virgin birth (Lk. 1:34). He showed how the answer of the angel completely .covered the situation and that every difficulty disappears before the one who has an adequate conception o f God. —o— “ The smoking flax shall H e not quehch" in Matt. 1 2 :20 is given in the margin: “A dimly burning wick shall H e not quench." When Jesus saw the smoldering wick of a man’s ■poor love, He shielded it, and breathed the oxygen of His love upon it. —o— The best commentary on Jesus’ words in Matt. 5:39 is His own dignified and meek conduct when rudely struck (Jno. 18:22-23). It does not mean that one should invite a second stroke. After suf fering one indignity, he is to be prepared to meekly submit to another if necessary. The spirit of revenge has no place in a Christian (Rom. 12:19). t*------------------- :------— ------- —---------- - f POINTERS F O R PREACHERS ---------------------- :------------:------------------4» “All of.'this propaganda for shorter sermons comes from young people who don’t know how to enjoy a daytime nap.” This from the Los Angeles Times. ■— o — There may be a grain o f truth in the statement o f one o f our exchanges: “ God divides His blessings. To some men He gives eloquence; to others, brains.” — o — There is sound advice in the following from the pen of a great preacher: “To preach what we stand for rather than de nounce what we are against, will mean more to the upbuilding o f the kingdom. To lift the light is the best way to dis-: pel the darkness.” — o — The following from the Dearborn In dependent is in point: “ The teaching function is all but dead in the American Protestant Church . . . The curse of “topics” has been the ruin of the pulpit. If only the ministry were expert in its

| j . In Phil. 3 :21 Paul declares that our citizenship is in heaven. Moffatt trans lates it: “We are a colony o f heaven.” That is, here is a settlement of citizens o f heaven in a foreign world. —o— Three great questions,: Are there few that be saved? (Lk. 13:23). Who then can be saved? (Lk. 18:26), ; What must I do to be saved? (Acts 16:30). —o— Heb. 11, the chapter which illustrates faith, is full of works and shows how. in separable are the two.
