A MESSAGE FROM PRECIOUS MOMENTS CREATOR, SamButcher

That might sound very unusual to us, but in Corinthians 1:15 the Bible says a woman’s hair is her glory. And if the woman’s hair is her glory, then the woman in the story laid her glory at the feet of Jesus. That is exactly what we should do. It is not important to let everyone know who you are. What we should do, is let the Lord know what kind of people we are so we can come to Him for forgiveness. What Sam learned from reading this – about the broken box and the hair – is that whether it is a show horse or a soldier in an Army, sometimes we have to be broken before we can be transformed into a vessel fit for the Master’s use. Thinking of God as a champion of the outcast and forgotten also reminds Sam of a story his mother told him. Sam’s mother was one of many daughters, and when she was 4 years old, her father passed away. Her mother could not care for them all, so she gave her daughters to different members of the family. God was gracious enough to have Sam’s mother live with her grandparents. Her grandpa was a pastor in a Pentecostal church, and sometimes they would have a foot washing ceremony. It was during one of these ceremonies that a black woman entered the church and wanted to take part. It was a different time back then, a time when racial prejudice was commonplace. Sadly, every one of those church members passed that African-American woman by, not one of them offering to wash her feet. But Sam’s dear great-grandmother knelt before her, and she washed her feet. This is what the Lord wants from each one of us – for us to show Him who we are, what condition we are in, and how much we need Him for forgiveness. As we celebrate the 40th anniversary of Precious Moments, we remember that it all began with a talented artist named Sam Butcher and his uplifting illustrations. Throughout the decades, his humble demeanor and unassuming ways of communicating his messages have won him the respect and appreciation of fans all over the world. At the Family Reunion Event last summer held at the Precious Moments Chapel, attendees were treated to a rare opportunity – the chance to attend a live talk from Mr. Sam Butcher. He was inspired to share “Four Things God Wants You to Know.” In the last issue of MOMENTS Magazine, we relayed how Sam explained that the Lord is a God of wisdom. And before that, he showed us that He is a God of Mercy. So what is the third thing God wants you to know? Sam thinks that He wants you to know that He is the God of the outcast and forgotten. He shared a beautiful story that tells of the loving kindness of our Lord. It is about a woman who the Bible calls “a sinner.” It doesn’t say if she was a mother or a wife, just a sinner. She heard that Jesus was in the house of Simon in Jerusalem, so she went to Simon’s house and walked inside very quietly. She saw Jesus, walked right toward Him, and knelt down. With her she had an alabaster box that was filled with rare and precious ointment. She broke the box before the Lord and poured the ointment on His feet. She proceeded to wash His feet with the ointment and her tears. She was a sinner, but there was one thing that she wasn’t – she was not in denial. She knew what kind of a person she was. She knew that she had to admit her condition and come to the only one who could not only forgive her,

but someone who could heal her broken heart. After she washed the feet of Jesus, the Bible says that she wiped His feet with her hair.

There is no doubt that technology is simply amazing. We can find the answer to nearly any question with just a few strokes on the keyboard or a voice command. We’ve created “smart homes” and robotic vacuums. Encyclopedias have been replaced with search engines. But with the awesome power of technology also comes temptation. We are tempted by the 24-hour access to news, current events and games that are, quite literally, right at our fingertips. • Plan a “game night” for board games, puzzles, cards, or dice. Precious Moments Chief Executive Officer is answering your questions and looking toward the future! Recently, we caught up with Precious Moments CEO, Steve “Kos” Kosmalski, and asked for his insight on some of your most commonly asked questions. Read on for his candid answers!

Where do you see Precious Moments in the future? We see the Precious Moments brand expanding beyond just keepsakes, collectibles, décor, and other products. The notion of Loving, Caring, and Sharing associated with Precious Moments can apply to film, games, and services of all types! We are exploring all kinds of new ideas – just picture something like a Precious Moments movie! We are very excited about the possibilities. I love Precious Moments but am on a tight budget, are there affordable gift options? First, I would keep an eye on our website where we often offer great promotions where key products can be purchased for less. In addition, in response from requests from Precious Moments fans, we have developed more than 100 items in the last year which include affordable décor, baby gifts, religious items, garden accents, and hostess gifts, all priced below typical porcelain prices. Finally, we have added scores of products from our licensees to our website of varied other Precious Moments products like stuffed animals, clothing, and housewares which also are lower priced. I have a great idea for a figurine, how can I share it with Precious Moments? We love new ideas and have developed some great product as a result! There are a lot of variables that go into making an idea “work,” nonetheless, we need all the ideas we can get as some of them will make it through our pre-testing. Do you have a favorite figurine?

I tend to like the pieces which are recently developed, as I witnessed the product development team turn the emotion into the concept, and then into the piece itself. Right now, I’m in love with the Limited Edition figurine which features little children around Jesus with the verse “Be Ye As Little Children.” If you like it as much as I do, you’ll be happy to know it is available now at PreciousMoments.com! Beyond that, I’ve been purchasing many of the smaller zinc alloy crosses with “Hope,” “Believe,” and “Love” printed on them. It is with great sadness that I share with you that we lost our Director of e-commerce and catalog sales, Jim Kowalczyk, to cancer last December. The Lord called him home early at the age of 56. Jim worked tirelessly until the very end, taking such pride in making Precious Moments merchandise available to so many people around the world. Please keep Jim’s family in your thoughts and perhaps dedicate an extra prayer for them as well. Precious Moments recently announced an exciting partnership with a remarkable organization – Feed the Children. This non-profit organization operates with a mission to provide hope and resources for those without life’s essentials in order to create a world where no child goes to bed hungry. Shehnaz Safiuddin, Vice President of Marketing for Precious Moments explains why it’s such a natural alliance. “Precious Moments’ foundation was built upon beautiful artwork created by Samuel J. Butcher, all of which highlight the sweetness and innocence of children, and the hope that lies within each of us. Feed the Children takes this hope one step further because they know that a well-fed child can then focus on learning and development, ultimately breaking the cycle of poverty and giving all children a chance for a brighter future.”

It’s easy to see why Precious Moments and Feed the Children make a perfect partnership. In addition to a long history of giving back to the community, Precious Moments’ stated mission is to “make the world a better place by helping others share the gift of love.” Feed the Children was founded in 1979 with a focus on ending childhood hunger. A s we celebrate 40 years of Precious Moments, we can’t help but appreciate the different stages of building such a lasting legacy. Much like an enduring love story, the first decade is spent growing with love, discovering who you are, both individually and together. During this special time, we learn so much about each other – not only likes and dislikes, but what made us who we are. We hear about family traditions for the first time, learn about our broken hearts, and find out what truly makes us happy. We also find out how to solve differences, how to be respectful of one another, and that anything this wonderful is worth fighting for. During these years of discovery, things are exciting and even after a few years, a new childhood memory will pop up to be shared or an old family recipe might be made for the first time. Yes, we believe the first ten years of any lasting relationship sets the foundation for what is to come. In much the same way, the first ten years of Precious Moments set a strong foundation for the future. That first decade saw the dawn of not only a remarkable collection, but also the Precious Moments Collectors’ Club, countless Local Club Chapters across the country, and the beginning of construction of the Precious Moments Chapel in Carthage, MO. It was quite the whirlwind romance! As we are celebrating, we can’t help but see the correlation between Precious Moments’ story and YOUR stories of love and longevity.
