Day of Service in Jamaica on April 27, 2017: We were greeted as we departed the Ship at 7:30 am by the Rotary Club of Montego Bay, Rotary Club of Falmouth, other Rotarians from District 7020, Rotaractors, media, and dignitaries.
The ship’s captain James MacDonald, Hotel Director Gary Davies and other crew joined us on the dock for the welcoming ceremony. Representatives from the Ministry of Health, Cornwall Regional Hospital, the National Education Trust (part of the Ministry of Education), the Falmouth Port Authority and District 7020’s District Governor Haresh L. Ramchandani and Past Assistant Governor Michelle Hemandas were also there to celebrate the delivery of supplies and our visit.
A special collage was given to Montego Bay Rotary’s Past President and perpetual International Service Director Bhagwan Chuganey (“Mr. C”) in appreciate of his amazing dedication to this Day of Service and over 12 years of partnership with the Carrollton-Farmers Branch Rotary Club.
Several TV stations and newspapers attended the welcome ceremony, and they were excited to share the news about the Rotary donations for the island.
Flashback several months before the cruise--- two clubs have been busy packing boxes for this Day of Service. The Carrollton-Farmers Branch Rotary Club gathered and packed the medical supplies (which were generously donated by Baylor Scott & White’s Faith in Action Initiatives), dental supplies (which were donated by McKinney Rotary Club and Dr. Mike Jones), toys (which were donated by Terrell Rotary Club), school supplies (which were donated by Rockwall Rotary and CFB Rotary) and other items. And the Rockwall Rotary Club gathered and packed 60 boxes of library books.
The 146 boxes were stored at Shamrock Precision which is owned by CFB Rotarian Gary Embrey. His staff was amazing! (Also want to thank Two Men and A Truck in Carrollton for the 60 boxes they donated.) Each box was color coded so loading would be easy when we were on the pier in Jamaica packing buses to leave on the tours.
The most unique item that we delivered was an 800 pound audio booth. Dr. Dwayne Atwell, an ENT surgeon in Muskogee, Oklahoma, donated the booth and the audiometer. The CFB Rotary Club paid for the calibration of the audiometer and purchased an accompanying tympanometer to make it a complete set with Dr. Atwell’s assistance. This “portable booth” can be set on wheels and used in many locations in a hospital or taken in a truck and used off-site as well. Cornwall Regional Hospital is thrilled with this donation. It will be the 4 th such booth on the island and the first booth to be in public use. Because the booth is made of welded steel construction they expect the booth to last for many years.
A bond was subsequently formed between the two clubs which resulted in joint projects, including the provision of wheelchairs for many needy, disabled individuals, as well as supplies for children's homes. When District 58101 decided to hold their 2017 conference on the Liberty of the Seas, whose itinerary included Falmouth, the entire district, including Carrolton-Farmers' Branch club, decided to become involved in Rotary projects in Jamaica on Thursday, April 27. During the visit, the Rotarians had the opportunity to tour Bogue Hill Primary, Tower Hill Primary, the Montego Bay Learning Centre, and Blessed Assurance Children's Home in St James; St Peter's Early Childhood Institution and Wendell Stewart Basic School in Trelawny. “Audiometry is the process of testing the function of the ear to see if the person is hearing or not. And that test is currently only available at private practices. In terms of public, there is no hospital currently that does hearing testing,” Dr Jedusing told the Jamaica Observer West, shortly after the donation. “This is great because now it allows us another level of expertise and test to the patients who are coming in, which will facilitate us rendering better health care.” The hearing booth was in addition to the over 100 boxes of donated items, which were transported on the Liberty of the Seas cruise vessel by Rotarians from Texas to the Falmouth Cruise Port recently. The boxes included a variety of much-needed equipment and supplies for the Cornwall Regional Hospital. The over 200 Rotarians who accompanied the boxes were in the island for an International Day of Service. About 14 years ago, Regina Atwell Edwards, a Rotarian from Texas, came to Jamaica on holiday and visited the Rotary Club of Montego Bay. After her return home, her club, the Rotary Club of Carrolton — Farmers Branch, District 5810 l, partnered with the Rotary Club of Montego Bay in several community projects.

Regional Cornwall Regional Hospital gets help from US Rotarians Thursday, May 11, 201 FALMOUTH, Trelawny — The Cornwall Regional Hospital (CRH) recently received a gift of an audiological booth, equipped with an audiometer, courtesy of visiting Rotarians from Texas, USA, making the facility the only public hospital able to conduct hearing tests. Dr Winston Jedusing, head of the ear, nose, and throat department at CRH, expressed gratitude for the gift.

The portable audio booth was loaded in the back of a truck waiting to be delivered to our District 5810's U-Haul truck driven to the port. Many thanks Dr. Dwayne Atwell for his very generous donation. Along with much appreciation to his staff, Shamrock Precision (who stored our 146 boxes for the trip and who help load everything), Galveston port employees, and Royal Caribbean for all of their logistics efforts to make the delivery of these donations possible. It is not easy moving an 800 pound audio booth but we were told it is in great need in Jamaica. Only 3 are in operation on the whole island and none are located at a public facility. We were able to bring the audiometric booth and all of the equipment (audiometer with bone- conduction and tympanometer) for the ENT department at Cornwall Hospital.
While we at the reception, 7 pallets with 4,000 pounds of books and supplies were offloaded. After photos and inspection by customs, the boxes were packed on the bottom of the tour buses and the buses left for many destinations on the island.
5 tours set out to see the island
Tour 1 (Green Tour): first stop was Blessed Assurance Children’s Home, which sits on 5 acres outside Montego Bay. It serves children and young adults who have been abandoned and many are disabled. This facility opened in 2008 and has been supported by the Montego Bay Rotary Club for many years including presenting 6 water tanks and a water pump.
A $200 check was presented from the Carrollton-Farmers Branch Rotary Club.

Tour 1 ‘s second stop was the Montego Bay Learning Center, which is the site of the 7 in classroom libraries sponsored by the Rockwall Rotary Club. They also donated 690 books and school supplies. This project was inspired and managed by Montego Bay Rotary President Dominica Pradere who is a retired teacher.
The 6 members from the Rockwall Rotary were presented with a plaque that will be proudly displayed onsite. Assistant Governor John Curtis and Assistant Governor Chuck Bealmear headed up this project from the US side. 3,770 library books in total were delivered and divided between all of the schools that this Day of Service supported.
We are sorry we are unable to post photos of the precious special needs children who attend this K-12 school. The teachers are working hard to help them learn life skills as well as a typical classroom education.
Tour 2 (Blue Tour): This tour focused on visiting 2 of the 5 schools which received a water tank system. First stop was Bogue Hill Primary (whose water tank was sponsored by Preston Trails Rotary and District 5810). Preston Trails Rotarians President Charles Skeen, Andrew McAnally and Jerrica Anderson traveled on the cruise to specifically see this water tank and told us they will take home the message of the importance of International Service.
2 nd stop for the Blue tour was Tower Hill Primary whose water tank was sponsored by Prestonwood Rotary Club (in memory of Rotarian Van Northrup who worked tirelessly for better water in the world) and District 5810. School supplies, 974 books and dental goody bags were also delivered to the schools by Tour 2.

At the end of their visits, Tour 1 and Tour 2 met at Shoppes of Rose Hall for a traditional Jamaican buffet lunch and some shopping. Assistant Governor Regina Edwards presented a $1,000 check from the Farmers Branch Rotary Club to the Montego Bay Rotary Club for the construction of the 6 th water tank !
Tour 3 (Red Tour) was the Work Day Tour sponsored by District 5810. They visited St. Peter’s Basic School in Falmouth with the BIG task to improve the whole front of the school including painting “everything vertical” as one member told us. First you have to scrap off the old paint though…
Thanks to Prestonwood Rotary and District 5810, St. Peter’s also received a water tank. Prestonwood Rotarians Glen Campbell and PDG Larry Webb were on hand to see their donation. These systems fill with water at night and ensure that the school has water during the day in case the city water pressure is lost. This allows the school to remain open and the children to remain in class during these times of low water pressure. Montego Bay Rotarian Conrad Grant, who is a retired school principal, was the mastermind behind all of the water tanks and he stands ready to do more if any clubs are interested.
Lots of Hard work by everyone resulted in great progress ! District 5810 Rotarians also delivered 759 books, school supplies and dental supplies to the school.
The Rotaract club returned to St. Peter's Early Childhood Institution in Falmouth the following week to finish the job by painting all of these beloved characters on the walls

Tour 4 (Orange Tour) visited Wendell Stewart Basic School (whose water tank was sponsored by Prestonwood Rotary Club and District 5810) and they enjoyed passing out school and dental supplies and 403 library books. Then Tour 4 traveled to St. Peter’s to help paint and work. At the conclusion the two tours traveled to Glistening Waters restaurant for a well-deserved lunch.
Tour 5 (Yellow Tour) was all about sun and beach. They visited Tropical Bliss Beach Club and enjoyed lots of fellowship time.
