AMERICAN EXPERIENCE Ruthless: Monopoly's Secret History Discover the fascinating and unexpected history behind America's favorite board game. Part detective story and part pop culture commentary, the film explores what makes this game a celebration of unbridled capitalism such an enduring favorite. TPT 2 Monday, February 20, 8 p.m.

Developed by Chuck D and his producing partner Lorrie Boula, this series tells the story of hip hop as a political tool for speaking truth to power. The series includes first-hand accounts from some of rap's most integral players, and deconstructs the origins of this bold and revolutionary art form through the voices of those who were there at the start, creating an anthology of how it became a cultural phenomenon against the backdrop of American history. In four parts. TPT 2 Tuesdays, starting January 31, 8 p.m.

TPT Passport Q+A

What is TPT Passport? TPT Passport is a benefit for members who give $60 or more annually: one that requires a username and password (which you can create by going to tpt.org/sign-in and setting up an account) that you use to log in to tpt.org or the PBS Video App to watch additional episodes of your favorite TPT shows. Whether you’re on the site or in the app, you’ll notice a small compass symbol in the corner of the show image. That’s your invitation to watch a show that’s only available to members. How can I access shows within Passport on my SmartTV? By using the PBS Video App! Download the app from the app store, and use your TPT Passport credentials to log in and gain access to extended programming. Why do I need to log in for some shows and not for others? A lot of shows are available for all to stream online. Episodes marked as “Passport” are shows you’ll need to log-in to watch, whether that’s online or on the app. Did you know that, as a member, you get access to extended, on-demand programming through TPT Passport? This month, we’ve rounded up some answers to commonly asked questions. As always, you are welcome to reach out to members@tpt.org to solve any tech issues you might encounter.

Can I watch TPT Passport shows online? Yes! Head to tpt.org and search for your favorite shows in the search bar. Watch on-demand videos after logging in.

What shows are on TPT Passport? All kinds of shows! TPT adds new shows every week. From Masterpiece Classics , to Finding Your Roots , Austin City Limits , America’s Test Kitchen , and many more.

Twin Cities PBS & Legacy funding inspire action

Legacy funding empowers TPT to document and preserve Minnesota’s arts, culture and history stories, and to design new pathways for engagement, education and connection. TPT’s web series like Relish, Outside Chance, and Worn Within are attracting new and diverse audience members with stories about Minnesota’s rich cultural heritage. Viewers can now access these series anywhere, anytime on YouTube and tpt.org .

STORYTELLING REFLECTS OUR DIVERSE COMMUNITIES

MAKING AN IMPACT THROUGH EDUCATION

WEB SERIES ATTRACT NEW AUDIENCES TPT is committed to creating more digital-first arts, culture & history web series. New platforms draw in new and diverse audiences and expand the impact of our storytelling. Launching in early 2023, the digital first history series, Jim Crow of the North Stories , is a continuation of the award- winning, Legacy-funded, Jim Crow of the North documentary.

Reflecting our diverse communities in Minnesota, both in front of and behind the camera, is a priority and a commitment for TPT. Bring Her Home , a Legacy-funded film directed by Indigenous filmmaker, Leya Hale, tells a story of hope by sharing the experience of three women fighting to bring justice for their family members as part of the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women’s (MMIW) Movement.

Season 2 of STAGE , a broadcast arts program, was hosted by musician and educator Natalia Romero Arbeláez, who also worked with TPT Learn to develop custom educational guides and standards-aligned activities for educators to use with the program. STAGE provides a platform for Minnesota artists, expands access to the arts for audiences, and helps Minnesotans discover artists with whom they might not be familiar.

“There are so many reasons why we support TPT, but two are especially important at this time. First, we feel that trustworthy news and science programming are necessary to inform and elevate our community. Next, the quality educational programs are essential while schools are interrupted due to the pandemic. TPT is unique in responding to current societal needs while innovatively looking towards the future. This is why we have included TPT in our will.” -Allan and Helen Rossman For more information contact: Development Department at 651-229-1410 or development@tpt.org TPT.ORG/visionary

How to Grow Old? Cicero Has Some Sage Advice By Richard Eisenberg

Next Avenue: Ben Franklin was such a fan of this book, he printed a translation in 1744, which was one of the earliest classical works published in America. Philip Freeman: In the 18th century, there were a lot of people reading Cicero in America, England and France. Ben Franklin had one of the few printing presses in Philadelphia, so he jumped on this. Next Avenue: There's a line in the book where Cicero says: 'Everyone hopes to reach old age, but when it comes, most of us complain about it.' Not much has changed in about 2000 years, has it? Philip Freeman: He says: If you reach the age of 800, you'd still be complaining about the fact that you were going to die.

You might not think that Cicero, the Roman philosopher and statesman who died in 43 BC, would have anything useful to tell us about growing old in 2023. Turns out, he does. The pearls of wisdom from Marcus Tullius Cicero shine in his slim book, "How to Grow Old." It's been translated by Pepperdine University classics professor Philip Freeman. Cicero wrote "How to Grow Old" at 62, about a year before his death. It's written as a fictional dialogue between the Roman leader Cato, 84, and two men in their 30s asking for his advice on growing older.

'Everyone hopes to reach old age, but when it comes, most of us complain about it.'

Next Avenue: One of Cicero's lessons I love: The mind is a muscle that must be exercised. He says: 'Our minds and spirits are like lamps of oil, and we'll grow dim with time if they're not replenished.' These days, we hear that keeping your brain sharp is a way to fend off dementia. Cicero was talking about reading and learning and conversing — and engaging with ideas. If you just retire mentally, you're going to grow old extremely fast.

I talked with Freeman, 61, about what we can learn from Cicero about aging well.

Next Avenue: 'How to Grow Old' is a small book, but Cicero packs a lot into 90 pages.

Philip Freeman: It's a summary of an awful lot of wisdom from an awful lot of sources with his own particular twist. A lot of it is based on his own life.

When Siblings Remember Childhood Differently By TJ Butler

Last fall my husband and I drove by the house I lived in at thirteen. I don't know why I expected it to still be there; in my memories, it was barely standing, part red and white aluminum siding and the rest a mishmash of wood and brick. The roof sagged in places. A house like that wouldn't have survived the decades. In its place stood a picture-perfect two-story brick house with a manicured lawn. I wanted to stare into the windows. Instead, I looked away. Part of my childhood had been erased. It wasn't a good part. There were so few of those.

I was the black sheep, at the center of the family's dysfunction. I explosively butted heads with my mother. There was a constant undercurrent of drinking, hitting, and yelling. My memories are like flashbulbs of violence with my mother's boyfriend as the aggressor. My sister was four years younger and quiet. She rarely if ever bore the brunt of his anger. I was the one who fought back while she shrank into the safety of her bedroom.

I read a quote once that said something about how no two siblings have the same parents.

It's taken me decades to realize that rather than sharing similar memories, my sister likely remembers me as the problem. The last conversation my sister and I had was by text seasons ago. She'd read something I wrote that described details about my abuse and subsequent years in foster care. She was furious about how I'd described our mother. She said I was lying and gave examples from her own memories to illustrate that things had been fine back then. I haven't heard from her since. I'd always incorrectly assumed she and I bonded over the shared experience of our childhoods without stopping to consider how different they were. I read a quote once that said something about how no two siblings have the same parents. The two of us are living proof of that.

TJ Butler visiting her mother's house the summer after high school graduation.

I considered my younger sister's and my own childhood when we lived in that house. I've written a lot about my childhood; the domestic violence, the rage and the alcoholism. The house was the last place I lived with my family before my mother put me into foster care.
