27. When Death Is Gain “Sacrifice and offering thou didst not desire . . . Then said I, Lo, I come . . . I delight to do thy will, O my God” (Psa. 40:6-8). Son of Man . . . reveal to me that my sacrifice is never perfect in my Father’s sight until in the view of my spirit it is a sacrifice no more. Then and only then shall I know what it is to be made conformable unto Thy death, to have fellowship with Thy suffering, to be in communion with Thy cross. I shall learn that dying is life, that loss is gain, that perfect sacrifice is fullness of joy. —George Matheson."

DAILY DEVOTIONAL READINGS [ Continued, from Page 134] heart oi Paul when he cried, “I count all things but loss . . . that I may know him.” . . . There are hosts of us that do not need comfort; we are too smugly and coldly comfortable as we are; we need a commotion. We need to be set on fire; —Christian Witness. The Unveiled Christ ‘‘Fear not; I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore” (Rev. 1:17, 18). The great “Fear not"! I hear it now . . . above the clamor of the hour in Which I live, amid the clash of arms, amid all the babel of earth’s confused noises. “Fear not.” This unveiled Per son fills the vision. It is He that was dead but is alive for evermore. “There fore will we not fear, though the earth do change, and though the mountains be shaken into the heart of the seas.” —G. Campbell Morgan. The Test . “Let your moderation be known unto all men” (Phil. 4:5). The very test of consecration is our willingness not only to surrender the things that are wrong, but to sur render our rights, to be willing to be subject . . . No Christian worker can ever be used of God until the proud self-will is broken, and the heart is ready to yield to God’s every touch, no matter through whom it may come. —A. B. Simpson. Christ First "In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge” (Col. 2:3). If you once get to nature’s God,-and believe Him, and love Him, it is sur prising how easy it is to hear music in the waves, and songs in the wild whisperings of the winds . . . Get Christ first, put Him in the right place, and you will find Him to be the wisdom of God in your own experience. —Charles Haddon Spurgeon. Quiet Places “He leadeth me beside the waters of quietness” (Psa. 23:2, margin). There must be at all costs some' Upper Room in our lives where Christ gathers us about Himself . . . Those whose lives are withdrawn, it may be by suffering or by some compulsion which shuts them off from the more active work of the world, may here be among the best benefactors of man kind . . . But it is ever needful for us all to keep quiet places in our lives and preserve our souls from be ing overwhelmed in the rough seas. —A. T. S. James. 23. 24. 25. 26.
