- First and foremost, for the excellent chemistry I had with my closest colleague, Ellen Pompeo, and the great atmosphere and energy that we maintained on the set for years. When you're shooting for 15-16 hours a day, and doing so over and over again for an entire decade, it can be a big challenge. And no, not everything was always ideal. Just as that is rarely the case in large families, and the team on our se- ries was just that, a large family. What was the most valuable lesson you learned while filming this series? - When you’re working on a character for so many hours of the week, it’s easy to forget who you are. I’ve learned that you need to separate yourself from the character and not get caught up in the dynamic be- cause you’re in it all the time. When your real life gets replaced by the one that takes place in front of the cam- era, it’s easy to get confused and forget who you real- ly are. I won't deny that it would happen that Derek Shepherd would take me over and in my real life I was more Derek than Patrick. But experience teaches you to control that unusual Jekyll and Hyde relationship. How demanding was it to work on Grey’s Anatomy? - Working on the show itself was a lot of fun. That’s my job and what I genuinely enjoy doing. However, on the other hand, it’s very difficult to handle the tempo. When you start working on a season, the only thing you’re certain of is that you have 24 episodes that need to be shot and you have no control over your life. When your wife asks you, “Can we go out to dinner?” you have to say, “I don't know what my schedule is like. I can't tell you.” You try to balance out a family life with a ca- reer and you try to be a husband and a father to three children. That’s almost impossible alongside an acting career. You always think about making sure you don’t miss out on those special moments, but at the same time you’re aware that you’re the one providing for them
and securing the future of those children precisely with the work you do, and that it’s better for them if you’re not there, but rather in front of the camera. Could you tell us something about McDreamy that we might not know al- ready? - The show has been going on for so long and so much is known about it and the main characters that I think it would be simply unbelievable for such a de- tail to exist, but I always find it interesting that journal- ists don’t doubt that the character of Derek Shepherd was written for me, while the truth is that I wasn’t the first choice for that role at all. I was invited to audition for another role, and I only got the role of Derek when Rob Lowe turned it down. But the role wasn’t quite yours even then? - Yes, even then the producers weren't sure that I was the right choice. In order for me to finally become part of Grey’s Anatomy, I had to go through a screen test with Ellen Pompeo so that everyone could check for themselves that it was possible for there to be chemis- try between us. My fate was literally in her hands. Ellen was very attentive during my audition, and I remem- ber how that made me feel truly welcome and accept- ed. And the rest is history.
Bio sam potpuno okiran, a onda sam počeo da se smejem. U stilu, ovo je ala, zar ne? Uvek sam bio druga violina I was completely shocked, and then I started laughing, like, this is a joke, right? I’ve always been the bridesmaid
