Grade School Valentine’s Day
THE STAKES NEVER FELT HIGHER
It was the age when we were developing our first crushes. So, we’d want to give the person we liked something special. But it couldn’t be too special — if it was, they might know you liked them! Spending precious time wondering whether your third-grade classmate should get a Tweety or Sylvester card is quite amusing now, but it felt so important back then. The cards you received felt just as high stakes. I remember constantly feeling nervous about whether so and so would give me a card. Well, of course, they would — giving one to everyone was part of the rules! But the idea of being left out was so nerve-wracking, and I had to scrutinize each card for its possible hidden meaning. Then lunch came around, and it was time for recess! After spending all that time worrying about who liked whom, nothing else happened because we were kids. After all that mental energy, we’d forget the idea until the following year. As an adult, Valentine’s Day rarely inspires that type of nervous energy, but we have other considerations to contend with. One word of advice: Check your valentine’s food preferences before making a romantic dinner! The first year my wife and I were married, I learned about capers and compote to make a crusted red snapper for Valentine’s Day. But while she was very appreciative, my wife couldn’t bring herself to eat a fish with the head still on. Whoops! Fortunately, it’s the thought that counts. And no matter how high the stakes, one day won’t make or break your future. This season is a good reminder to show all the people we love how much we appreciate them, whether our relationships are romantic or not. Maybe you don’t want to buy a perforated card or a stuffed bee that says “Bee Mine,” but there are many ways to show people how much you love them throughout the year. If we did it more often, the world would probably be happier. -Dr. Jason Schermer
Happy Valentine’s Day! Here’s your reminder to get your significant other the gift they might be expecting before it’s too late. I get my wife a card every year, and chocolate-covered strawberries or grapes are always a nice touch. But whenever Valentine’s Day comes around, I can’t help but associate it with my time in grade school. Things were both simpler and a lot more complicated back then. I’ll never forget those few years from roughly ages 7–10 when everyone in the class would pass out Valentine’s Day cards to each other. It was a big event. We’d all get a small box, decorate it with construction paper and cutouts, and display our names prominently so everyone knew whose box was whose. Then we’d agonize over the little perforated, mass-produced tokens of affection we would slip inside. They usually had Looney Tunes or other cartoon characters emblazoned with cute sayings. You had to pick just the right ones at the store to match your personality and how you wanted the other kids to see you. But selecting the right card for each classmate was the most challenging decision.

That’s Amore
OUR FAVORITE PIZZA RESTAURANTS
Pizza has long been known informally as America’s favorite food, with approximately 350 pieces eaten in the U.S. every second. That’s a lot of pepperoni! In honor of National Pizza Day on Feb. 9, we wanted to share some of our local favorite pizza shops, plus one a little more out of the way. If you’re one of the 40% of Americans who eats pizza at least once a week, mark these names down for a flavor explosion. PIZZAZZ ON THE CIRCLE This family-owned restaurant in University Heights is the perfect location for anyone looking for an old-fashioned delicious pizza. You won’t regret ordering a simple pepperoni pie, but the menu is full of specialty options for more adventurous types. Pizzazz’s menu also extends far beyond pizza, so you can persuade the pasta and salad lovers in your life to join you. Take a look at their diverse offerings by visiting PizzazzPizza.com. GERACI’S RESTAURANT Originally opening in 1956, Geraci’s Restaurant now has three locations in the greater Cleveland area. Its owners are proud of using the same recipes passed down through their family through generations, offering traditional Sicilian flavors for modern foodies. Geraci’s also boasts an extensive menu,
but their traditional and gourmet pizzas are the show’s star. You can look at all the mouth-watering options by visiting GeracisRestaurant.com.
DEWEY’S PIZZA Andrew DeWitt opened the first Dewey’s Pizza restaurant in Oakley in 1998, but it now has two dozen locations and has become a favorite of many Ohio pizza lovers. But DeWitt doesn’t like to hear his creation referred to as a “chain” because each location maintains a commitment to fresh, unique pizza that people love. While other options on this list dabble in pasta and other entrees, Dewey’s keeps it simple with a menu restricted to pizza and salad. Place your order by visiting DeweysPizza.com. GIORDANO’S Much to my regret, the nearest Giordano’s is about two hours away. So, it’s probably not your best bet for a Friday night pizza run. But if you are in Columbus or another city with one (find a complete list at Giordanos.com ), check them out. I’m a raving fan for a reason, and you might become one, too!

3 Unique Winter Activities to Experience
WANT TO TRY SOMETHING NEW THIS WINTER?
CHECK OUT THESE 3 UNIQUE ACTIVITIES
Throughout winter, we have the opportunity to participate in many activities that are only possible during this season. We can ski, snowboard, snowshoe, sled, and more. While some people fly south for winter vacations to escape the cold weather, others travel to extraordinary winter destinations within our country. Plenty of options are available if you’re looking for a truly unique experience this winter. Here are three winter activities that will leave you with long-lasting memories. SNOWMOBILE TOURS IN ALASKA Alaska is one of America’s hidden gems, even though it’s the biggest U.S. state. If you’re looking for unique winter experiences, you’ll want to visit Alaska. One of the coolest adventures you can experience is a snowmobile tour. You can hop aboard a snowmobile and ride the same path as the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race or visit some beautiful mountains and glaciers. Many of these tours will lead you right past moose, bears, and caribou as you take in the beauty of Alaska’s environment. SKATING ON MIRROR LAKE AT LAKE PLACID Lake Placid, New York, had the privilege of hosting the Winter Olympics twice, so it’s no surprise they have some amazing cold weather activities to showcase. A truly exceptional experience is skating on Mirror Lake. They have a 2-mile-long ice track where you can test your speed and areas for people to skate openly or play a game of ice hockey. You can even participate in dog sledding there. It’s a beautiful area filled with various winter activities.
ICE FISHING EXCURSIONS IN BRAINERD, MINNESOTA While fishing might be more commonly known as a spring or summer activity, you can get plenty of fishing done in the winter if you know where to go. Brainerd is considered one of the best places to visit for ice fishing enthusiasts. There are over 300 fishing lakes near the city, and you can expect to catch bluegill, walleye, largemouth bass, yellow perch, northern pike, and many others. If you like to fish throughout the year, check out Brainerd.
