Na Bogojavljenje je, po predanju, božji glas objavio da je Isus njegov sin Bogojavljenje je je- dan od najvećih hri- šćanskih praznika i pro- slavlja događaj koji se desio neposredno nakon što je Sveti Jovan Krstitelj krstio Isusa Hri- sta u reci Jordan. Prema predanju, u bogojav- ljenskoj noći se otvorilo nebo i Sveti Duh je sišao u obliku go- lubice na Isusa Hrista, a sa ne- ba se čuo glas Boga: „Ovo je Sin moj ljubljeni, koji je po mojoj volji.“ I upravo zato svi na bogo- javljensko veče treba da zami- slimo želju, pa u ponoć pogleda- mo u nebo i poželimo da se ona ostvari. U Srbiji se Bogojavljenje obeležava 19. januara i to je fik- sni praznik, odnosno ne menja se iz godine u godinu. Na Kr- stovdan, uoči Bogojavljenja, kao i na sam praznik, posle liturgije, vrši se veliko osvećenje vode u hramu ili u porti hrama. Ta vo- da se uzima i nosi kući. Čuva se kao čudotvorna sveta dragoce- nost. Pije se tokom cele godine radi isceljenja i zaštite od svih bolesti i očišćenja duše i tela.
The Epiphany, one of the biggest Christian holidays, celebrates an event that occurred immediately after Saint John the Baptist baptized Jesus Christ in the River Jordan. According to traditional be- lief, the skies opened on the night of the Epiphany and the Holy Spirit descended to Jesus Christ in the form of a dove, and the voice of God could be heard from heaven: “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased”. And that’s precise- ly why we should all think of a wish on Epiphany eve, then look to the sky at midnight and wish for it to come true. In Serbia, the Epiphany is celebrated on 19 th January as a fixed holiday, meaning that the date doesn’t change from year to year. On the date of the Elevation of the Holy Cross, which marks the build up to the Epiphany, but also on the holiday itself, following the lit- urgy, a great blessing of wa- ter takes place in the temples or the gates of temples. That water is collected and taken home. It is kept as a miracu- lous, sacred treasure. It is con- sumed throughout the entire year for healing purposes and protection against all diseas- es, but also to purify the body and soul.
Plivanje za krst Najpoznatija posebnost Bogojavljenja jeste pliva- nje za Časni krst koje se organizuje širom Srbije. Ia- ko je napolju obično veoma hladno, skupina hrabrih i smelih pliva za krst. Zapravo je u pitanju drevni obi- čaj Starih Slovena koji su odnosili svoje idole iz do- mova i hramova na reku i kupali ih, što se očuva- lo nakon pokrštavanja u vidu plivanja za krst i pranja ikona za Jovanjdan. Swimming for the Holy Cross The most famous element of the Epiphany is swim- ming for the Holy Cross, which is organised nation- wide across Serbia. Although it is usually extremely cold outside, a gathering of brave and daring individ- uals, swim for the cross. This is actually an ancient custom of the Old Slavic peoples, who would take their idols from their homes and temples to the river to wash them, which was preserved after conversion to Christianity in the form of swimming for the cross and washing icons on the holiday of St. John. Kakva će biti godina? Običaj je da se na Bogojavljenje izađe na neku ve- trometinu, iznese malo pepela i pušta pomalo iz ru- ku. Tako se određuje koji je vetar pobedio na Kr- stovdan. Ako duva istočni, godina će biti sušna; ako duva jug, biće kišna; ako duva zapadnjak, biće rod- na, ali i olujna; ako je prevladao severac, biće veo- ma hladna. What will the year be like? It is customary during the Epiphany to head to some windy area and release ashes from the hands. This determines which wind “won” on the holiday of the Elevation of the Holy Cross. If an easterly wind blows, the year ahead will be dry; if the wind is a southerly, it will be rainy; if a westerly wind blows, it will be a fer- tile year, but also a stormy one; and the ‘victory’ of a northerly wind heralds a very cold year.
