Sime- on passed away in 1199 and was de- clared a saint just a few months later. Sava became a deacon and priest at Hilandar at the start of the 13 th century, then later also earned the title of archimandrite in Thessa- loniki. Upon returning to Serbia in 1207, he brought his father’s mor- tal remains back with him. It was in 1219 at the court of the Byzantine Empire in Nicaea that the ecumenical patriarch consecrated Sava as the first Serbian archbishop. It was thanks to him that the Serbian Orthodox Church became autocephalous, i.e. independent. Sava published the first Serbian Nomocanon in 1220, rep- resenting a compilation of law that included ecclesiastical and civil laws related to ecclesiastical-canonical is- sues. Sava handed over the title of archbishop to his student Arsenije at Žiča Monastery in 1234, thus pro- claiming Arsenije the second Serbian archbishop. He then embarked on a journey, wishing to end his life wan- dering in some unknown country. He travelled and toured holy sites until falling ill in Veliko Tarnovo, where he died on 27 th January, 1236. King Vladislav transferred Saint Sava’s mortal remains to Mileševa Monastery sometime around 1237, but the Ottomans (Grand Vizier Koca Sinan Pasha, 1595) incinerated them in Belgrade’s Vračar neighbourhood, on the site that is today the magnif- icent Temple of Saint Sava.

He was born in 1175 as Rastko Nemanjić, the youngest son of Grand Prince Stefan Nemanja and Ana Nemanjić, the daughter of Byzantine Emperor Romanos of Con- stantinople. He regularly attended church services already during child- hood and was particularly interested in icons. He met a monk when he was 17 years old and soon travelled with him to the Monastery of Saint Pan- teleimon on Mount Athos, abandon- ing his father’s house. It was at this monastery, in 1192, that he became a monk and received the name Sava. Grand Prince Stefan Neman- ja also left his kingdom of Raška in 1196, joining his son at Studenica Monastery, where he also become a monk and received the name Simeon. The same year saw Rastko’s mother, Ana, abandon the life she’d lived un-
