Don’t Let Aches & Pains Hold You Back! 4 Ways To Beat The Pain!
3. EXERCISE Regular exercise can help restore proper muscle tone. Walking, cycling and swimming are good aerobic activities to try. Be sure to warm up before exercising and cool down afterward. Our experts at Mid-Michigan Physical Therapy Specialists teach you stretching, toning and aerobic exercises to feel better and stay pain-free. Drink lots of fluids. Begin slowly and increase workouts gradually. Avoid high-impact aerobic activities and weight lifting when injured or while in pain. Consult one of our experts or your doctor before trying exercises you are unsure of doing. 4. PHYSICAL THERAPY Through our program, specialized hands-on techniques and treatments are applied, addressing the poor alignment and dysfunction of the spine, which can irritate and cause pressure on nerves. Physical therapy is the science of restoring pain-free movement with exercises and hands-on techniques. These principles are applied to the body when an injury is sustained to help facilitate a great recovery.
Are you like many people, suffering from aches and pains? A daily back or neck ache may be more of a nuisance than anything. However, episodes of pain can become progressively worse, lasting longer and traveling to other parts of your body. If you don’t stop the cycle of pain and discover the root cause of each painful episode, the accumulation of damage to your body may lead to eventual failure of the spinal structures and possible surgery. However, if you address and treat the cause of your pain early through physical therapy, drastic measures such as surgery can often be avoided. Here are some tips to help you battle daily aches and pains: 1. ICE & HEAT For muscle pain fromoveruse or injury, rest that body part and take acetaminophen or ibuprofen depending on what your doctor may advise you is best. Apply ice for the first 24 - 72 hours of an injury to reduce pain and inflammation. After that, heat often feels more soothing. 2. SLEEP Be sure to get plenty of sleep and try to reduce stress. The amount of sleep is dependent on your body. Some people only require 7 hours, others 9. Also, make sure you have a good mattress and sleep on your side or back with pillow support for your legs. If you sleep on your side, put the pillow between your legs. If you sleep on your back, put the pillow behind your thighs.

Call MID-MICHIGAN PHYSICAL THERAPY If: • Your muscle pain persists beyond 3 days • You have severe, unexplained pain • You have any sign of infection, like swelling or redness around the tender muscle • You have poor circulation in the area where you have muscle aches (for example, in your legs) • Your muscle pain has been associated with starting or changing doses of a medicine
Why Do Your Muscles Ache? M uscle aches and pains are common, typically involving more than one muscle. Muscle pain can also involve ligaments, tendons, and other soft tissues that connect muscles, bones, and organs. Muscle pain is most frequently related to stress, tension, overuse, or muscle injury from exercise or physically-demanding work. In these situations, the pain tends to involve specific muscles and starts during or just after the activity. It is usually obvious which posture or activity is causing the pain. Most aches and pains are temporary and generally last 1-3 days. However, once muscle pain begins to go past 3 days without changing, or you feel the same aches and pains repeatedly, it’s time to give us a call as there may be an underlying problem such as muscle imbalance, or stiff tissues and joints.

Patient Success Story
I will be forever grateful!
“Hi, I’m Bill Lucas and on March 2nd, 2016 I was in a significant snowmobile accident that caused me to shatter my both sides of my pelvis, left femur, left tibia/fibula, and my left ankle. I had to be air lifted to U of M hospital for extensive surgery including plates
and screws through out my entire left side. Once I was able to be discharged from the hospital it was highly recommended by my physician to come to Mid-Michigan PT Specialists. At the time I was on strict non-weight bearing rules and confined to a wheelchair. My therapist and therapy assistant found ways to get around that and were diligent in my recovery process. They worked hard to restore my range of motion of my hip, knee, and ankle, decrease the pain in my left leg, and improved my strength for me to walk again. I now have been in therapy for several weeks and I am now walking independently, I can climb stairs, lunge, squat, and I have been able to return to my job as a contractor walking on roofs! Knowing just how damaging my accident was it is remarkable to see how far I have come. I owe a lot of my progress to my Physical Therapist, Brianna Cavaleri, and physical therapy assistant, Wendy Bednarski, for their hard work and one on one time they devoted to my care. They gave my hope to return to my active life style with my beautiful wife and three children as well as return to my independently owned company, Lucas Construction, to provide for my family. I even plan to snowmobile again this winter! Whenever anyone talks about needing physical therapy, I highly recommend Mid-Michigan PT Specialists. They not only assisted in getting me better but also gave me back the life I lived prior to my accident and I will be forever grateful for that!” - Bill L.

Q & A with Katrina Royce, DPT What do you most like about being a Physical Therapist?
For me, I have always wanted to work in a profession whereby I could help others. Being a PT, is a perfect fit for me as I can help people who are in pain with hands-on individualized care. What do you like most about working at Mid-Michigan PT ? I love the time we are afforded at Mid-Michigan Physical Therapy Specialist with each patient because I get to treat patients in exactly the fashion I have always wanted to: individualized and one-one-one. Where is your favorite place to vacation? or you would like to visit? The sun and the sound of waves are so incredibly therapeutic for me. I have been to the Florida Keys and Maui and absolutely loved both. Next on my list of travels: Thailand! What is your favorite place to visit in Michigan?
Over the summer my family and I had several opportunities to join friends and family to travel around Michigan. We went to Michigan Adventures (which was amazing!), Mackinac Island, the state fair, and camping in Hartland. All the areas were so different and wonderful in their own way. When not working, what do you like to do ? When I have time off I love to read, play cards with friends, spend time at the beach and have bonfires! What is something about you, that might surprise others? Something about myself that seems to surprise people, although I’m not sure why, is that I am an excellent pool player.
