You made it after experience, af- ter giving the alternative a fair and honest chance. You noticed what those relationships required of you, what they asked you to tolerate, and what they returned in exchange. Then you chose something differ- ent. That kind of self-awareness is not something to be corrected. It’s something to be respected, even if not everyone is capable of doing so. The challenge now is not strength- ening your decision, because it’s already strong. The challenge is loosening your need for it to be un- derstood. As long as you are hoping others will see your choice the way you see it, you leave yourself open to their interpretations. And those interpretations will almost always reflect their own beliefs, fears, and preferences more than your reality. You don’t need to win that conver- sation. You only need to stop par- ticipating in it. That doesn’t require defensive- ness or distance. It requires a kind of quiet finality. When someone suggests you’ve given up, you can simply let that be their conclusion without correcting it. When they imply you’ll change your mind, you can allow them to hold that belief without adopting it yourself. Not every assumption needs a response, and not every misunderstanding needs to be resolved. There is con- fidence in allowing others to be wrong about you without feeling compelled to fix it.
