Harrison’s Essentials A Different Kind of Southern Comfort by Harrison Vale
I traded ocean views for neon signs this month.
Imagine rows of gleaming Les Pauls suspended overhead like artwork. Vin- tage acoustics displayed beneath dramatic lighting. Limited edition customs with finishes so flawless they belong behind glass. I watched seasoned mu- sicians pick up six figure instruments with the kind of reverence normally reserved for rare watches or rare Ferraris. Fortunately, reason returned around the same time I wandered into the acoustic room and heard a man casually play a version of “Tennessee Whis- key” so hauntingly beautiful the entire room stopped moving. Nashville has that effect on people.
Friends looked genuinely concerned when I mentioned Tennessee. One asked if I’d suddenly taken up fly fishing. Anoth- er wondered if this was some sort of spiritual retreat. Hardly. I was chasing something rarer these days, authenticity with a little swagger. I landed at Nashville International Airport, known simply as BNA, which has absolutely no business being this impressive. BNA somehow feels like an extension of the city itself, warm lighting, soaring wood accented ceilings, live music stages tucked between gates, modern art installations suspend- ed overhead, and enough neon glow reflecting off polished white floors to remind you exactly where you’ve landed. Massive renovations over the last several years transformed the airport into something closer to a luxury hos- pitality space than a transportation hub.
The city’s luxury scene, however, extends far beyond music.
The following afternoon led me to Nashville Barrel Company Distillery and Whiskey Bar, a sophisticated whiskey destination hidden inside
My first evening began beneath the glowing lights of the leg- endary Grand Ole Opry, a sacred ground for American music. Since 1925, the Opry has hosted generations of country legends and remains the longest running weekly radio show in the world. Inside, the energy is impossible to fake. Cowboy boots click against polished floors while voices rise beneath the same stage lights that once framed John- ny Cash, Patsy Cline, Dolly Parton, and countless others. Even if country music has never occupied your playlists, the experience reaches beyond genre. It feels deeply American and slightly rebellious. The following morning took me downtown to The Gibson Garage, which may very well be the closest thing guitar lovers have to a cathedral. Located in the heart of Nashville, this flagship showroom is a museum, luxury bou- tique, and part fever dream for musicians.
an industrial style distillery just outside the city center. This was not your average tourist tasting filled with syrupy flights and gim- micks, but rather an experience centered around beautifully aged bourbon and rye poured with confidence. The tasting room carried notes of charred oak, leather, caramel, and spice. Bottles rested behind glass like rare jewels. I sampled a single barrel cask strength rye that arrived with enough complexity to rival certain Scottish single malts commanding four digit prices at auction. The locals discuss whiskey the way Europeans discuss wine. They debate bar- rel finishes. They compare aging climates. They know which pours disappear within hours of release.

IS YOUR HOME READY FOR HURRICANE SEASON?
A short drive beyond Nashville’s brought me to Lynchburg and the iconic Jack Daniel’s Distillery, where Tennessee whiskey begins with cave spring water filtered through lime- stone and traditions dating back over 150 years. The property vibes felt almost cinematic, with black iron gates, rolling hills, and brick ware- houses. There is something quietly paradox- ical about sipping world class whis- key in such an unassuming setting, leaving one to wonder whether the contrast was carefully orchestrated or simply a fortunate accident. One particular tasting included ultra premium expressions rarely found outside collectors’ circles, rich with maple, smoke, toasted vanilla, and dark cherry. Tennessee is a must visit. At least once in your life. It’s diverse, complex yet pure. One minute you’re seated be- neath crystal chandeliers sipping top shelf bourbon. The next you’re listen- ing to a fiddle player who sounds like true Americana. And that’s my take on this wonderful adventure.

Truth without Trimmings — Olivia Montclair
Help! Olivia,
Friends suggest I’ve “given up.” Others assume I must be lonely, even when I tell them I’m not. There’s a persistent belief that I’ve simply removed myself from the possibility of happiness, rather than arrived at my own version of it. What I struggle with is not my decision, but the way it’s perceived. As though choosing not to participate in the dating world must mean some- thing is wrong, rather than something has been learned.
I’ve been married twice, and neither experience left me eager to try for a third.
Both marriages taught me a great deal, mostly about what I don’t want. After my second divorce, I did what everyone insists you should do. I put myself back out there. I dated. I gave it a fair chance. What I found, how- ever, was not exactly encouraging. The men I met often came with issues I no longer have the patience for, excessive drinking, unstable finances, or a level of emotional immaturity that felt more like something to manage than a partnership to enjoy. At some point, I made a decision that felt both practical and liberating. I stepped away from dating entirely. Instead, I turned my focus inward. I’ve invested in my mental clarity, my physical health, and my spiritual well-being. I’ve built a life that feels bal- anced, peaceful, and genuinely fulfilling. There’s no chaos to manage, no compromises I resent, no sense that I’m waiting for something else to begin.
How do I stand firmly in a choice that feels right for me?
— At Peace, But Questioned
Dear At Peace, But Questioned,
There is a difference between stepping away and giving up, and it’s one that many people are either unwilling or unable to recognize. Giving up has a tone of defeat to it. It suggests resignation, dis- appointment, a quiet sense that something didn’t work out the way it should have. What you’ve de- scribed is something else entirely. You evaluated your experiences, you paid attention to patterns, and you made a conscious decision about what
And yet, despite how intentional and considered this choice has been, I’m still met with skepti- cism.
Contentment without partnership confuses people who were promised it as the reward. — Olivia Montclair

you were no longer willing to participate in. That isn’t retreat. That’s discernment. The discomfort you’re encoun- tering from others has very little to do with whether your choice is right or wrong. It has every- thing to do with how unfamiliar it is. Most people are taught to keep trying, to stay in the cycle, to believe that persistence will eventually be rewarded with the right partner. When someone steps outside of that loop and does so calmly, without bitterness or urgency, it disrupts the expec- tation. It can even feel, to some, like a quiet rejection of a system they’re still invested in. Rather than question the system, they question you. There’s also an assumption woven into social life that fulfillment must come from partnership, particularly after a certain age. When you remove that element and still present as stable, content, and self-directed, it creates a kind of cognitive dissonance. People don’t quite know where to place you, so they reach for familiar explanations. You must be lonely. You must be protecting yourself. You must eventually want what they want. It’s less about curiosity and more about restoring a sense of order to their understanding of how life is supposed to work. Your letter reflects discernment rather than avoidance. You didn’t make this decision in a vacuum. Continued On 14A

You made it after experience, af- ter giving the alternative a fair and honest chance. You noticed what those relationships required of you, what they asked you to tolerate, and what they returned in exchange. Then you chose something differ- ent. That kind of self-awareness is not something to be corrected. It’s something to be respected, even if not everyone is capable of doing so. The challenge now is not strength- ening your decision, because it’s already strong. The challenge is loosening your need for it to be un- derstood. As long as you are hoping others will see your choice the way you see it, you leave yourself open to their interpretations. And those interpretations will almost always reflect their own beliefs, fears, and preferences more than your reality. You don’t need to win that conver- sation. You only need to stop par- ticipating in it. That doesn’t require defensive- ness or distance. It requires a kind of quiet finality. When someone suggests you’ve given up, you can simply let that be their conclusion without correcting it. When they imply you’ll change your mind, you can allow them to hold that belief without adopting it yourself. Not every assumption needs a response, and not every misunderstanding needs to be resolved. There is con- fidence in allowing others to be wrong about you without feeling compelled to fix it. You’ve built something that many people are still searching for, a life

that feels internally aligned, not externally validated. That tends to unsettle people more than it in- spires them, at least at first. Over time, though, consistency has a way of quieting commentary. When your life continues to reflect peace, stability, and satisfaction, most people will eventually adjust, even if they never fully articulate that shift. You are not stepping away from happiness. You are defining it on your own terms. And that is a far more deliberate act than most peo- ple realize.

For What it’s Worth by L.E. Murphy
H i everyone. Well, it’s that time of the year again. The snowbirds are gone, the traffic is lighter (maybe) and the heat is on. That also means the dreaded anxiety that comes with hurricane season. It runs from June 1 through November 30, but to my recollection, my worst fears rise up in August and September. But this year I am going to be positive. Not about the storms, no one wants them, but about getting myself as prepared ahead of time. Unless you are new to Florida, it is no surprise that we have to stock up on canned and non-perishable food, water and medicine, but we don’t have to wait until the last ominous moment, or drain our bank account because we’re racing around at the last minute buying
everything we can get our hands on. Here is my plan. I am going to stock up on bottled water each time I go to the food store. Let me add right here that there are plenty of ways to use the water that comes from the tap. Just pour as much as you can into things like pots and pitchers. Hey, water is water! There should be plenty on the shelf so that no one gets rammed by a crazed shopper at the last minute. I’m also going to stock up on food that I know I’ll use throughout the year if we don’t have a hurricane. For me, that means tuna fish, crackers, peanut butter, jelly, spam (ugh! But I buy it every year, and have never once eaten it) and lots and lots of snacks! Don’t forget pet food for our furry friends who will feel the same anxiety that you feel if you’re not prepared. As for
medicine, don’t wait until the last minute to refill a prescription, and some physicians/pharmacies will give you medication early to have on hand. I don’t know about you, but as soon as I hear there is a hurricane out there somewhere, I clean. It’s true! I’m like a madwoman mopping floors, straightening closets and dusting furniture. Why? Who knows? I’m not here to explain my weirdness to you, I’m just stating the facts! I also never let my car gas tank get below three quarters of a tank. It’s like a security blanket so that if the time comes, I don’t have to face lines of cars or signs that say “out of gas”. For the kids, stock up on things to do, like puzzles and games. I’d say books but even though they’re my best friends, most children would disagree. If your children are addicted to their electronics, you might have more to worry about besides wind and rain. An addict without their fix isn’t a pretty sight! And don’t forget to fill your bathtubs or other containers so that you can add water to the back of your toilet to flush during power outages. Stock up on flashlights, batteries and insect repellent. Also, my favorite, paper towels. I love the environment and try very hard not to overuse them unless there is a hurricane. Then I give myself permission. Hey, I can’t help it. It makes me calm! Please don’t rely upon candles. They’re good for light, but they’re also good for burning down your house. As always, it goes without saying to move all your outdoor
furniture and flying objects inside or they will move themselves inside through the window they break during strong winds. And it also goes without saying, NEVER leave your pets outside. Hopefully you have window protection. Hurricane windows and doors are
optimal, but good old fashioned metal shutters do just as good a job, although you can’t wait until the wind has picked up to install them. They can become dangerous. If you are using shutters, make sure that after the wind dies down, they come off. They can’t stay on all summer because it hampers being rescued in an emergency. If you do decide to leave, make your plane reservations early. Planes stop flying at a certain point well before the hurricane. Also bridges are barricaded once the wind reaches a certain speed. If you are going to leave by car, just remember that in past years, some hurricanes have covered the entire state and even on up to Georgia, so staying put might be your best bet. Once you make your plans, you can rest easier knowing that you’ve done all you can do. For What it’s Worth, I’ve lived here almost fifty years, and fingers crossed, I’m still here to write about it! Good luck and be safe to us all!

Designer Fashions The Ultimate Treasure Trove in West Palm Beach —by Denise Copeland
A girls day out doesn’t need much convincing to have a great time. Laughing, lattes in hand, we decided to turn the day into a full treasure-hunt thrifting run. We ended up on South Dixie and wandered into Coastal Consignment Boutique , just to take a quick look. This lasted all of 5 seconds before we excitedly decided this was our destination. In a nutshell, Coastal Consignment is a very upscale thrift store on steroids. No junk, just high-end, well-kept vintage and designer pieces. And not just one or two labels mixed in for effect. We’re talking Gucci, Fendi, Versace, Hermès, Chanel, Tiffany, Stubbs & Wootton, Coach, classic Ralph Lauren, and racks of Lilly Pulitzer that feel like they came straight out of a Palm Beach closet. Christian Louboutin if you’re lucky. As soon as we walked in, a Lilly dress practically jumped off the rack and into my arms. That’s my story if anyone asks. What’s not to love? Bright blues, punchy pinks, fresh greens, the bold tropical prints that built the entire Palm Beach look in the first place. Lilly is impossible to ignore, and somehow always appropriate whether it’s brunch, a boat, or anything in between.

The best part that of Coastal Consignment ? The prices. These aren’t small markdowns. You’re looking at real savings on brands that rarely go on sale, if ever. direct buyouts. With more than 200 items purchased daily, the inventory
is constantly evolving, giving shoppers a fresh reason to visit again and again. Even more enticing, the May-August Blowout Sale offers additional savings the more you buy: clothing, jewelry, handbags, shoes, and collectibles are eligible for discounts of 10% when purchasing 3 to 4 items, 15% off 5 to 9 items, and 20% off when buying 10 or more items. Off to my left, prominently displayed, was a mint Versace shirt that clearly needed a new home in my closet, which I paired with a scarf, white denim slacks and, Hermès belt and a Gucci bag to pull the gold tones together. Shoes could go either way, a neutral heel to dress it up or those Stubbs & Wootton loafers to keep it relaxed. And if this turns into dinner later, I’ve got my eyes on a Ralph Lauren leather jacket. That’s exactly how this place works. You’re not just buying random pieces, you’re pulling together unique designer style without having to leave the store. I also spied a chic Chanel jacket that clearly hadn’t suffered through anyone else’s bad decisions. Fendi pieces tucked in between. A tasteful silver Tiffany necklace sitting quietly in the case. You’ll find everything from Coach, Prada, Armani, Tom Ford,

The Women Who Walk Into Darkness So Others Can Walk Free
There are causes that attract attention, and then there are causes that demand courage. Human trafficking belongs to the latter category — a shadow industry built on silence, fear, exploitation, and the uncomfortable reality that much of society would rather look away.
Diana Davis refused to look away.
In the inaugural episode of 33480, the Town of Palm Beach podcast, Davis — founder of the nonprofit MoviesMakingADifference — shared the remarkable story behind an organization that has rescued hundreds of trafficking survivors while using the power of storytelling to expose one of America’s most hidden criminal networks. What emerges from her story is not merely the portrait of a nonprofit founder. It is the portrait of a woman who stepped into a dangerous world most people do not even realize exists — and stayed there long enough to help others escape. A Story That Began With Shock Davis did not begin her career as an activist. She was an actress, a restaurateur, and by her own admission, someone who knew little about
the machinery of human trafficking unfolding inside the United States. That changed when she encountered investigative reporting on the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (FLDS), a polygamist sect operating near the Arizona-Utah border. At first, she admits, she misunderstood the issue entirely. Like many Americans, she assumed these isolated religious communities were eccentric but largely harmless. What she eventually learned was far darker: forced marriages, child labor, coercion, systemic abuse, and organized trafficking hidden beneath the veneer of religious authority. Rather than retreat from the horror of it, Davis made an unusual decision. She would fight it through film. That decision became MoviesMakingADifference a nonprofit born from the production of a feature film that sought to humanize survivors while

raising awareness about trafficking in America. The organization’s first film won Audience Choice for Best Feature Film at the Palm Beach International Film Festival in 2014. But for Davis, awareness alone was never enough. Beyond Awareness: Rescue, Recovery, and Responsibility Many advocacy campaigns stop at exposure. Davis believed exposure without intervention was incomplete. After meeting survivors during the making of the film, she realized the victims leaving these communities often had nowhere to go. Many lacked basic education, financial literacy, housing, or support systems. Some had never attended public school. Others had no understanding of life outside the sects in which they were raised. One of the first families Davis helped was that of Ruby Jessup, an FLDS survivor who had escaped with six children. According to Davis, Jessup had briefly received media attention before ultimately being abandoned without long-term support. MoviesMakingADifference stepped in to help stabilize the family, enroll children in school, and provide ongoing care. That experience transformed the mission from filmmaking into direct action. Over the years, Davis says the organization has rescued nearly 300 individuals, many from trafficking rings tied to cult-like systems of control. What makes her work particularly compelling is its refusal to romanticize rescue. Davis speaks candidly about the realities: survivors returning to abusive systems, threats against her own safety, and the emotional complexity of helping people who have spent their entire lives conditioned to fear the outside world. This is not Hollywood heroism. It is painstaking, deeply human work. Organized Crime Wearing the Mask of Faith Perhaps the most provocative aspect of Davis’s testimony is her framing of these trafficking systems not simply as fringe religious communities, but as sophisticated criminal enterprises. She describes networks that allegedly used child labor to underbid construction contracts across the American Southwest, manipulated welfare systems, and trafficked women between sects under religious justification. Whether every claim can be independently verified is less important than the broader truth her story illuminates: trafficking rarely resembles the simplistic narratives Americans are accustomed to seeing on television. The victims are often hidden in plain sight. The traffickers are not always strangers lurking in dark alleys. They are authority figures, family members, employers, or trusted community leaders. And the systems protecting them are often social, economic, and institutional as much as criminal. Davis repeatedly returns to one devastating observation: many of the young people escaping these environments become immediate targets for further exploitation because they are isolated, vulnerable, and desperate for belonging. Trauma, after all, creates opportunity for predators. The Power of Storytelling as Resistance What separates MoviesMakingADifference from many anti-trafficking organizations is its insistence on narrative. 28A Vol. 646 YA Copyrighted© My Living Media. 2026 All Rights reserved. Davis believes storytelling can reach audiences that statistics and documentaries often cannot. Her films are fictionalized feature productions inspired by real experiences, designed to offer both emotional truth and hope. That distinction matters. Documentaries can inform. But stories can disarm defenses. They allow audiences to emotionally inhabit realities they might otherwise avoid. Davis also made a conscious ethical choice: protecting survivor identities. While many streaming productions monetize trauma through sensationalized retellings, she refused to expose survivors for entertainment value. In an era where trauma itself has become a commodity, that restraint feels increasingly rare. Palm Beach and the Culture of Philanthropy There is another layer to this story worth examining: why Palm Beach became central to the organization’s growth. Davis credits the philanthropic culture of Palm Beach and South Florida
