“ Poor Posture May Be The Cause Of Your Shoulder Pain.” WHAT IS CAUSING YOUR SHOULDER PAIN?

The majority of pain that travels from your neck to your shoulder is considered referred pain, meaning that your shoulder may not necessarily be the main issue. The first several degrees of movement in your shoulder comes from your shoulder joint, and the rest relies on the movement of your upper back, neck, shoulder blade, and collar bones working in unison. If these areas are not working together correctly then shoulder pain can occur. Most neck and shoulder pain is a result of prolonged poor posture, improper lifting of heavy objects, or a traumatic incident. These different occurrences all cause irritation to the joints in the neck and upper back, making the muscles around the upper back and shoulder tighten and become sore and painful. There are many nerves that originate in the cervical vertebral bodies that pass down in front of the shoulder heading towards the arm. Irritation of these nerves can refer pain to the shoulder. Poor posture, especially with sitting at work or at home, can cause this to occur. Rotation of the neck or tilting of the neck may create shoulder pain if these nerves are involved. It is important that a physical therapist examine you thoroughly if you are experiencing these symptoms. If you have had a fall or injury and suddenly develop shoulder and neck pain, you should seek help immediately. Shoulder and neck pain, if occurring together, may also relate to disc injuries or injury to other sensitive structures in the neck and upper back. This is typically more

likely if you are having neck and arm pain in unison, rather than just shoulder pain. Also, if your pain travels further down the arm and into your hand, this may indicate more severe nerve involvement. If you are experiencing any neck, shoulder, or arm pain, the skilled therapists at South Toledo Physical Therapy can help return you to a fully pain-free lifestyle!
