Thè leak was but “a little one,” yet it sank the stately ship, laden with hundreds of lives. It was only a pin upon the roller. It spoilt, however, a thousand pounds’ worth of print. There was simply a trifling indulgence in evil, but it ruined for life what might have been an honorable and successful career. It was a monosyllable that broke a loving heart. “Only a word of command, but it loses or wins the field;” only a little sin, persistently cherished, but it closes the gate óf heaven, and makes communion with God impossible. Just as the coral reef consists of a million tiny shells, So our lives are built up of a succession of things concerning each of which we might justly ask: “Is it not a little one?” MEN are sometimes inclined to apologize for Jesus Christ,- or a t least for their adherence to Him. Not so the Apostles of the Lamb. “Christianussum” (I am a Christian), was the badge to them, not of shame, but of distinction. They gloried in the Cross, and in Him Who hung thereon. They» ‘esteemed the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures” of« the world. We ought to do the same. The golden fetters of our bondslavery to Him are brighter jewels than blaze in Ducal coronets. We may well sing with the poet: “On all the kings of earth With pity we look down for we are the purchased and precious possession of the Poten tate of Heaven—the King of Kings, the Lord of Lords. Nay,; we are not only His possession, we are His friends; we are lifted up to an equality with Him. He' has made us to be a kingdom, of priests, a spiritual house, an Holy Temple; he has prepared for us a place beside Him on the throiie of the Uni verse ; he is not only our Saviour, He is our Brother and our Friend. Nothing save the folly of insanity Would be ashamed of such a Connection as that; a connection which might well fill the proudest of earth’s Monarchs with envy, were it not equally within their reach. Christ'is an honor to us, and we do dishonor to Him when we fail to recognize the fact. J une ' 14. “As is the mother, so is the daughter." — Esek. 16:44. THERE is no more wonderful gift of God to women than that of motherhood: alas! that in these modern days it is so often lightly esteemed. To be entrusted with the eternal des tinies of an immortal soul; to have a little life lent to us by God, that it may be trained for Him; who can estimate the honor and the privilege? On the other hand, who can measure the responsibility? What tremendous issues hang upon, the execution of the stewardship! What manner of people ought mothers to be, that they may perform their duties aright! For remember, it is not precept, but example, that tells in the for mation of childhood’s character. It is not what mother “says,” but what mother “is,” which will be finally reproduced in the unfolding life. There is a tendency to. imitation inherent in human nature and, like all our faculties, it is keenest in our earliest years. Moreover, ideas come to us through “Eyegate” much more quickly and effectually than through “Eargate,” and the constant propinquity of •infancy and youth with the mater nal cannot but stamp the character of the parent upon the off spring. Especially as this influence, continuous though unseen, falls in its tenderest and most plastic years. Truly every mother should pray daily that she may be sanctified by the Holy Ghost, and enabled so to live that there may radiate from her an atmos phere of purity, and beauty, and holiness, which shall be irresist- J une 13. “To you therefore which believe He is an honor ."— 1 Pet. 2:7.
