Battery-powered tools have transformed construction sites over the past decade, but welding has remained one of the last holdouts. The power demands of arc welding have traditionally tethered operators to generators, long extension leads or mains supplies. ESAB’s Renegade VOLT ES 200i aims to change that equation. Developed in partnership with DeWalt and powered by FLEXVOLT batteries, the Renegade VOLT ES 200i is among the first serious attempts to deliver professional-sgrade welding performance without relying solely on conventional power sources. Rather than being a novelty or emergency use machine, ESAB has positioned the VOLT as a production tool for maintenance crews, mobile welders, construction contractors and utility repair. What immediately distinguishes the machine is its operating flexibility. Users can weld in three modes: battery only, conventional mains power or ESAB’s AMP+ Hybrid mode, which combines battery and mains power to boost output and reduce the likelihood of nuisance breaker trips. This hybrid capability may prove particularly valuable on sites where available power is limited but welding

demands remain high. The machine supports both Stick and Live TIG

processes and delivers up to 200amps when connected to a 230-volt supply. Running purely from battery power, output reaches approximately 140amps for stick welding applications, offering sufficient capability for a large proportion of repair and maintenance work. ESAB claims the unit can burn up to 33 E6013 electrodes on a single charge using four 12 Ah FLEXVOLT batteries. From a practical standpoint, the Renegade VOLT addresses one of the most persistent challenges faced by field welders: access. Whether repairing agricultural equipment in a field, carrying out structural maintenance in a remote location or working in confined areas where generators are impractical, the ability to strike an arc without external power infrastructure can significantly improve productivity. Its rugged housing, integrated carrying points and sunlight- readable colour display reinforce its field-oriented design philosophy. ESAB has also included a suite of arc control features familiar to users of premium inverter machines, including Hot

Start, Arc Force, memory functions and a dedicated cellulosic electrode mode. These features help ensure portability does not come at the expense of performance. Battery-powered welding is not without compromise. Runtime is finite, and carrying four high-capacity batteries adds weight and cost.
