Fiona Brown delivered a thought-provoking presentation on the link between hearing loss and dementia. She also highlighted the support and resources available to local businesses through the charity. Following an update on BuildHealth activities over the past year from newly-appointed Vice Chair Aisling Murphy, GRAHAM Wellbeing Manager David Daly explored the shift from reactive mental health support to preventative wellbeing measures. He discussed how organisations can better support workers by focusing on long-term mental health strategies. Creative Composites HSE and Training Manager James Hegarty then presented on managing musculoskeletal disorders to sustain a healthy workforce. Drawing on his manufacturing background, he shared practical solutions that could be adapted for the construction industry. The conference concluded with a presentation from Kevin Dupont, Air Quality and Noise Control Consultant with RVT Group, who travelled from England to discuss how technological advances can help eliminate, control and monitor occupational health hazards on construction sites. His presentation featured Doug’s Story, a video produced by RVT Group and available on YouTube, which tells the story of a retired construction worker living with COPD caused
by exposure to dust. The powerful message resonated strongly with delegates and is now likely to be used across construction sites in Northern Ireland to raise awareness of dust- related health risks and the importance of effective control measures. BuildHealth was also delighted to welcome five new members, with representatives from AG Wilson Civil Engineering, Equans, Mills Contracts, NI Water and TLI Group signing Statements of Commitment during the conference. As always, a range of exhibition stands provided attendees with access to valuable information, support and take-aways from organisations including Alzheimer’s Society, Building Mental Health Alliance, Cancer Focus, CITB NI, Concept Occupational Health, HSENI, the Lighthouse Charity, Women’sTec, NISG and RVT Group.
