Before founding Momentum Textiles in the mid-1980s, CEO John Wilkinson spent years shaping his understanding of the upholstery industry. After graduating from the University of Texas, he joined Van Waters & Rogers and later transferred to Hickory, NC in 1970—working in an upholstery-fabric branch that served residential furniture manufacturers. In the afternoons, after finishing his daily responsibilities early, John began calling on contract furniture makers across Hickory and High Point, NC. That steady side effort grew into a thriving upholstery- supply business and ultimately laid the groundwork for what would become Momentum. Early sales meetings took place around a single conference table, supported by just a handful of reps covering multiple states. John’s leadership was shaped by simple principles: pair culture with strategy, listen to the people closest to the work, and treat everyone with fairness. He remained especially proud of creating an environment where women were supported and respected at a time when that was far from common. That people- first approach—and his belief in harnessing the “brainpower” of every employee— carried Momentum through challenges and growth alike. In retirement, his hope endures: that Momentum continues striving to be “the best in the world,” powered by the character and collective purpose that shaped its earliest days.

Redefining Sustainability Making a Mark by Not Leaving One. Our focus is simple: use fewer resources and get more from every material. We consider what goes into our products, how long they last, and what happens to them over time. By prioritizing safer chemistry, recycled and rapidly renewable inputs, and durable construction, we create textiles, wallcoverings, and acoustic solutions that work harder, last longer, and need replacing less often. We’ve led rather than followed—creating the market for PVC-free Silica, pioneering post-consumer recycled (PCR) polyester yarns and textiles, and launching EPU, Bio Silica Hybrid , and a biodegradable vinyl. We’re also the leader in PVC-free Type II wallcovering and the innovator behind Circon™, a bio-sourced, carbon-neutral Type II wallcovering—with much more ahead. That same commitment extends across our portfolio: Autex Acoustics®, the newest addition to our portfolio, is a carbon- neutral company built around circular systems, incorporating over 80% rePET into its products. That shift toward better inputs is paired with ongoing evaluation of how products can be repaired, reused, or responsibly recycled at end of life.

Operations Focused on reducing our operational footprint year after year, Momentum continues to invest in building performance and energy efficiency at both our Greensboro Warehouse/Design Studio and our Irvine headquarters, building on earlier renewable energy initiatives and ongoing upgrades that help lower resource use while supporting a healthier workplace. Sample recovery and reuse programs extend this effort by keeping materials in circulation and reducing waste tied to specification and packaging. Products Responsible, sustainable textiles, wallcoverings, and acoustics begin with the initial components. All of our products are free of PFAS, phthalates, added antimicrobials, and FR, as well as being Prop 65 compliant.
