He hadn’t argued with her. That would have required looking her in the eye and telling her he didn’t accept her decision. He always did this, fought from the sidelines, and to most people, that was “just how Simon was”. It was starting to feel like Toula’s struggle in My Big Fat Greek Wedding, except instead of an entire family deciding who Yasmin should marry, she had one restaurant manager deciding what she should do with her job. Still, Yasmin gave him the benefit of the doubt. Maybe he had mentioned her name, and people just made assumptions. An hour before dinner service on Thursday, Yasmin went into the office to print the night’s specials. Simon had left his computer unlocked, and a spreadsheet was open on the screen. Master Roster – Next Month Draft. She saw her name: YASMIN – FLOOR SUPERVISOR She stared at it, then looked at her hours: Friday: close; Saturday: open; Sunday: double shift. The following weekend was almost identical. A wave of heat rushed through her; she wasn’t sure if it was panic or rage.

That was the part that made her angry. How easily someone else had taken a routine that was already balanced and rearranged it for her.

Friday nights, she normally went home so her mother could sleep properly. Saturday mornings, she studied. Sunday was the day she took over at home for a few hours so her mother could get out of the house. Simon knew that she had told him so many times. But there it was on a spreadsheet, as though he never knew. That was the part that made her angry. How easily someone else had taken a routine that was already balanced and rearranged it for her. Yasmin took a picture of the roster and printed it. This time, she wasn’t going to have a conversation that Simon could later pretend meant something else. She found him at the host stand. “Simon.”
