Help! Olivia, I am struggling with a situation that feels both uncomfortable and concerning. An elderly neighbor of mine appears to be experiencing a noticeable decline in her mental capacity. She has locked herself out of her home more than once, called the fire department repeatedly over her irrigation system, and has begun confronting neighbors with accusations that we are talking about her behind her back. Her adult son insists she is perfectly fine living alone, but what I am witnessing suggests otherwise. The repeated emergency calls have even disrupted my own ability to come and go, and her confrontations have made me uneasy enough that I now find myself avoiding her altogether. I am concerned for her safety, but also unsure what my responsibility is, especially when her family seems unwilling to acknowledge the situation.
