Jason Reott’s entrepreneurial instincts showed up long before spreadsheets and smelting machines entered the picture. O n the island, gardens are rarely accidental. guidance of landscape architect, shaped over time and guided by a clear sense of style. The Garden Club has long influenced that standard, from public plantings to private estates, with flower shows that feel polished, competitive, and exacting. My own experience started very differently. The house is older, historic, and had gone through a stretch of neglect before I found it. The grounds reflected that. Overgrown, uneven, Landscaping is planned, sometimes with the and clearly in need of attention. But as I started clearing and looking closer, I realized something unexpected was already there. Orchids. Not placed or designed, just growing where they had settled over time. At the base of trees, tucked into corners, scattered throughout the property. They had survived for years on their own. The magical discovery of these delicate and ornate flowers changed my daily trajectory. I set out to rescue them. Carefully removing, repositioning, and giving them a better chance to thrive. I began by clearing the overgrowth, but shifted into restoration, backed by research on how to use the existing palm trees as structure, mounting orchids along their trunks to create a layered, living display of color. Not a formal garden, but a restoration. Working with what was already there rather than starting from scratch.

That was when the orchid world began to vibe with me. The South Florida Orchid Society, founded in 1945, brings together people who approach growing with that same level of care. Their meetings focus on cultivation, plant judging, and shared expertise. There’s a respect for the process, and for the time it takes to get things right. You see it in the plants themselves. Phalaenopsis, clean and balanced. Cattleyas, larger and more expressive. Dendrobiums, a bit freer in form. Vandas, which thrive here, often growing openly without pots. I started mounting my rescued orchids onto palm trees, letting them grow naturally. Over time, the roots wrapped and settled in, anchoring themselves as if they had always belonged there. I also make a simple potassium-rich fertilizer using banana peels soaked in water. I spray it lightly onto the roots. It’s not complicated, but it helps, and it keeps me connected to the process. Orchids have a refined, almost understated beauty. I’ve grown to appreciate them, and they’ve brought a sense of joy to my life. There’s something satisfying about bringing them back, giving them a place to thrive again. It’s not about perfection. It’s about paying attention and letting the garden thrive and evolve. In the end, what looks curated often starts with something much simpler. Just noticing what’s already growing and deciding it’s worth saving.
