CRITERIA FOR APPOINTMENT, REAPPOINTMENT OR PROMOTION IN THE RESEARCH TRACK

The following criteria and metrics will be used to evaluate individuals on the Research Track in the areas of Research, Teaching, and Administrative Service/Duties. The degree of achievement in each of the areas required for each academic rank are described below.

Research Evidence of ongoing, continuous development of research ability and reputation as reflected by the following: 1. Publications in peer-reviewed journals. Order of authorship, journal impact factor and number of citations are considered with emphasis on quality over quantity. 2. Research grants awarded as principal investigator/co-investigator. 3. Invitations to lecture and/or chair scientific sessions at regional, national or international meetings. 4. Presentations of scholarly work at regional, national or international meetings. 5. Service to scholarly journals as a peer reviewer, serving on Editorial Board(s), and serving as an Editor. 6. Authorship and editing of book(s) and chapters. 7. Participation and leadership in research programs. 8. Service on NIH Study Sections and Expert Panels and other roles as consultant or subject– matter expert. 9. Patent(s) held as inventor. 10. Evaluations from the candidate's peers, colleagues, division chief and/or department director outlining the candidate's achievements, contributions and potential. 11. Awards of merit for research accomplishments. 1. Evidence of teaching competence and accomplishments including awards and honors. 2. Documentation of the types of teaching activities in which the faculty member participates is required, including: • Number of hours per week of resident and medical student supervision • Documentation of attendance at teaching conferences • Evidence of formal didactic activities such as lectures at institutional teaching conferences, departmental grand rounds and basic science lectures • Other teaching and consulting lectures throughout UC College of Medicine, the city, and other institutions across the nation. 3. Evaluations from students, residents and peers are required. 4. Leadership and roles in educational programs and participation in the development of educational materials and programs. 5. Mentorship and advisory role for fellowships and other training programs e.g. graduate students and resident research rotations.
