ASSISTANT PROFESSOR

Appointment, reappointment or promotion to Assistant Professor is based primarily on the applicant's ability to provide excellent patient care. The individual should be developing expertise in his/her selected field of clinical specialty and should be able to handle most routine clinical situations. Evaluations from the candidate's peers, colleagues, division chief and department director should reflect the individual's clinical skills. Participation in the teaching program of the College is required and must be documented and quantified. The individual should demonstrate participation in scholarly activities as evidenced by peer-reviewed publications, book chapters and participation in research studies. Also, the individual should demonstrate initial or entry level participation in administrative duties and responsibilities, certainly at the department level. Additionally, he/she should begin to participate in the activities of professional organizations.

A candidate for appointment or promotion to Assistant Professor should have demonstrated record of impact at a local or regional level in these areas.

ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR

Candidates for appointment, reappointment or promotion to Associate Professor have fulfilled the expectations described for appointment to Assistant Professor. The appointment or promotion to the rank of Associate Professor must be based on convincing evidence that the faculty member has achieved excellence in patient care, teaching, scholarship and service. The individual should be capable of handling all common and most unusual clinical situations in the relevant areas of expertise. An extensive clinical practice and recognition as a regional expert are necessary for promotion to the Associate Professor level. Increased contributions to education in the course of clinical practice are required. The individual should have established a consistent pattern of peer-reviewed publications, and/or publication of chapters demonstrating engagement in scholarly activities including research. Invitations for speaking engagements is another important criteria indicating recognition of one's expertise. Participation in administrative matters of the department, College, and/or University are also positive factors for consideration of promotion. Candidates for appointment, reappointment or promotion to Professor have fulfilled the expectations described for appointment to Associate Professor. At this level, national recognition as a consultant in the specialty is required. Leadership roles in the College of Medicine and national organizations as well as invitations to participate in national and international conferences and symposia lend evidence of the individual's clinical expertise. The individual should be capable of managing all patients with disorders related to the specialties. On-going significant contributions and leadership roles to the educational programs are required. The faculty member has produced a significant body of scholarship that is recognized nationally or internationally and demonstrates on-going research productivity as might or could be reflected by research funding and on average 1 to 2 peer-reviewed publications per year.
