Motifs inspired by the wonderland of nature are whimsical and exquisite. A rich palette as evergreen as nature cov- ers flora and fauna, paying homage to abundance, Edenic qualities, and re- newal. Islamic gardens, long a haven for spiritual serenity, enrich this aesthet- ic language and turn it into ornamen- tation for remembrance. Floral motifs, botanical shapes, and gemstone cheer evoke gardens that caress the lucky be- holder of such jewellery. Arabic poetry delights in the mention of jewellery, frequently pairing it with metaphors for beauty, purity, and love. Poets compare teeth to pearls, spark- ly eyes to diamonds, and characters to gold. jewellery also shares a deep visual relationship with Islamic art and ar- chitecture. The intricate geometry that appears in necklaces, gemstone set- tings, and filigree work echoes the ar- abesques and tessellated patterns found in mosques, palaces, and manuscripts throughout the Arab World. Qemat Al Rafahiya - Pinnacle of Luxury T لطالما The realm of fantasia infuses the artistic imagination sur- The fascination with the Arab region has inspired painters to immerse themselves in its luxurious dreamscapes. 19 th -cen- tury Orientalist painters were enchant- ed by the region and its richly textured culture, depicting a range of themes, such as architecture, interiors, textiles, people, and jewellery. Their paintings transformed Middle Eastern adornment into a symbol of mystery and opulence within the European imagination. Jean-François Portaels [1818–1895] was a Belgian painter renowned for his at- mospheric and opulent depictions of the Orient. He frequently composed por- traits of Arab females, appearing draped in richly embroidered garments, pearls, gemstones, veils, ornate jewellery, and lush interiors that reflected Europe’s fascination with the imagined splen- dour of the Orient. The Arab World’s adoration of jewellery spans across the centuries, bearing wit- ness to the evolving tastes and aesthet- ic narratives of empires, royalties, trade routes, migrations, and cultural ex- changes. Fascinatingly, the ancient civ- ilisations across the Arab World demon- strated sheer imagination and crafts- manship in designing jewellery crea- tions. Fashioning gold, silver, pearls, and gemstones into glimmering and awe-inspiring artistic renditions, these creations have traversed far and long across the crossroads of caravans and coastlines, carrying within it memo- ries of deserts, ports, royal courts, and ancient kingdoms. The Arab region was considered one of the ancient world’s eminent crossroads rounding jewellery across the Arab World. Romantic, theatrical, and dream-like. Velvet-lined jewellery boxes across homes in the Arab region hold within them entire worlds of visual poetry, savoir-faire, and originality. An emporium of adornment awaits. From the region that gave the world precious pearls, ge- ometric splendour, and the mythic allure of the “One Thousand and One Nights”, expect no less from its world of jewellery. From royal courts glittered with diamonds and gemstones commissioned from the greatest jewel- lery maisons, to bustling souqs overflowing with heir- looms passed across generations, to the cinematic gran- deur of statement pieces worn for glitzy galas, salons, and celebrations, the Arab palette is one of sheer artistry. It’s the embodiment of “if you know, you know”. To understand the resonance of jewellery in the Arab World is, in many ways, to study the emotional and cul- tural history of the region itself. Where do you actually start? Jewellery has long been an interplay between the worlds of inner intimacy and outer visibility, worn for its layered emotions, yet presenting itself as a veritable symbol of status. Across the ages, the Arab region spared no expense at shap- ing the very language of ornament itself, introducing a philosophy of beauty rooted in storytelling, spirituality, and sensation. The restless imagination of artists draws them toward beauty in all its forms, leaving an artist to freely explore infinite possibilities for compositions. And so, impressions from landscapes, literature, architec- ture, emotion, and lived experiences have been rendered into jewellery creations. The rich language of symbols in the Arab World whisks artists away into a dreamscape. From mystical crescents, stars, and Qur’anic inscriptions to geometric arabesques, floral forms, birds, and coins, these richly symbolic mo- tifs reflect a spectrum of emotions surrounding spiritual- ity, femininity, prosperity, protection, and divine beau- ty. Many of these symbols travelled across civilisations and centuries, shaped by ancient traditions, Islamic art, and regional storytelling. In jewellery, crescents evoke cycles, femininity, protec- tion, and the cosmos, while stars symbolise guidance, light, and divine connection. Interestingly, such sym- bols also predate the Islamic age, appearing in jewellery creations produced by ancient Near Eastern civilisations to represent ancient moon deities.
