needs. Churches of different races like this could co-operate together just as denominations could co-operate together. In those places where members of other races are too few to organize an effec tive church there should be no difficulty in assimilating these with the church composed of the majority race. Marriage It has seemed to be a logical.conclu sion for those who advocate the practical equality of the races that there should be intermarriage. This seems to be high ly undesirable and once again largely for practical considerations. The casual ties as far as marriage is concerned are so large that it is obvious that even among peoples of the same race the difficulties in the way of a happy lasting marriage are very numerous indeed. To add to these by bringing in the race factor is at the very start to weigh the scales heavily against a successful mar riage, particularly when such marriage comes under social ostracism. The Christian is strongly advised not to en tertain thoughts of interracial marriage therefore in the present setup. It should be emphasized that this is not because of prejudice but rather because an ill timed idealism in regard to this may lead to disaster. QUESTIONS FOR DISCUSSION What is the Yellow Peril and is it real? In what way is C.E. helping toward better race relationships? Under what circumstances should white and colored dine together? Does the separation of the races have any practical value? Feb. 17, 1952 CHRISTIAN CITIZENSHIP PROMOTES BROTHERHOOD (Brotherhood Day) Gal. 3:26-29; Prov. 22:2 There is a good deal of confusion in people’s minds in regard to the meaning of brotherhood. There are two meanings which can be inferred from the Bible. One of them is that according to the flesh the Bible traces everyone physical ly back to Adam therefore all have this blood brotherhood. Then, there is the spiritual brotherhood by which people become the children of God only by regeneration. It is this latter meaning which is of the greatest practical im portance because unless people become brothers in their hearts as at conversion they can never be expected to act like brothers in practical life. Brotherhood Politically Perhaps the most obtrusive sense in which brotherhood is lacking is that between the nations, who, obsessed largely with selfish interest are at war

with one another, either cold war or hot war. Even the most astute states manship seems to be able to do little more than postpone the evil day. The Christian knows that the only solution is to bring his fellows in all countries into a personal knowledge of Christ as Saviour. This will ultimately be re flected in their governments which will feel that selfish strife is not in the interests of anyone at all. Christian Endeavor by virtue of its world-wide fellowship may exert a tremendous and basic influence towards this end. Economic Brotherhood Another jarring note in present day life is the strife that goes on at the economic level. Low standards of living, strikes, and vicious competition are the very antithesis of brotherhood. It is apparent that education can do little about this for it is not that people do not know what to do in regard to their relationships one to another economic ally but rather that their selfish inter ests are so powerful that they do not want to do it. The spirit of Christ is the orientation of the life so that the Christian should be as much interested in the welfare of his fellow as he is in that of himself. It is only as the result of the impelling power of the spirit of Christ within that he can practice the Golden Rule. For this rea son it is significant that many of the major contributions to the economic well-being of the masses have been made by devoutly religious men. * Social Brotherhood This aspect of our topic overlaps the discussion on the problem of race which exercised our minds last Sunday. Today we can take it a little bit wider not only that of white and colored in our com munity but also the general problem of assimilating into the national life the various peoples from other countries who are also of the white race and who have settled in this country. This was also the problem of Jew and Gentile in our Lord’s day. They found their unity in the fellowship of the Christian church. However, even on the basis of regenerate brotherhood, national char acteristics of thought, customs, and manners will remain. This fundamental relationship can help towards a greater tolerance and understanding knowing that each national can bring his par ticular contribution to the national life. Wider fellowship at international C.E. conventions can do a great deal to deepen this understanding. QUESTIONS FOR DISCUSSION Is brotherhood something that is in side ns or merely the way we act? What can C.E. do about the danger of war? What is the Christian alternative to the strike? How can C.E!. foster greater foreign intercourse?
