THE KRAMER CHRONICLES KRAMER LAW GROUP IS MAKING SOME MOVES! GET READY FOR SOME AMAZING CHANGES THIS MONTH 09.19 WWW.KRAMERLAWGROUP.ORG | 801.601.1229

T he season of fall is known for bringing about the winds of change, and here at Kramer Law Group, we’ve certainly experienced some changes of our own these last couple of months, the most important being our move to 8156 South Redwood Road! The transition from our office’s previous location (which is only a mile south from our new one) has been a long time coming — four years, in fact — but it has already been so rewarding. When I moved into our previous office, I knew I would eventually need to build a bigger space in order to continue our firm’s growth and ultimately help more clients. After spending time searching for an optimal area on Redwood (so we could stay close to the courthouse), one of my wife’s real estate friends found a spot in a perfect location. Now, the only thing separating our new building from the courthouse is a railroad track. Plus, the light rail station is conveniently located just across the street, which makes it easier for clients to visit! Once I purchased the land and obtained building permits (which took me nearly two years), it was time to start building. This part of the process was particularly exciting

With more room, we can add different practice areas, such as immigration and workers’ compensation, and hire more attorneys to help. We also have several conference rooms to host meetings with clients, various events, and legal proceedings; we have a larger break room and a gym for staff members; and most importantly, we have a multipurpose meeting room that can hold up to 85 people. I plan on using this room to host seminars, bootcamps, and training sessions regarding different areas of law to help educate people in the community. For example, one program I’m hoping to start soon is a drivers’ education course for Spanish-speaking individuals. Because the traditional programs are only taught in English, a great portion of our population is unable to participate.

"IN TRUTH, WITH ALL THIS NEW SPACE, THERE’S REALLY NO SHORTAGE TO THE NUMBER OF AMAZING EVENTS WE CAN ORGANIZE!"

because I knew exactly what I wanted the end product to look like. You see, whenever I’d visit the town of Draper, I would stop at Pirate O’s Gourmet Market for lunch, and one day, I noticed a beautiful building going up next door. When I asked if I could take a look around, they kindly obliged. From that day on, I knew what my future office would look like. Now that I’m officially in it, I couldn’t be happier with the aesthetic. My excitement for the building’s exterior reaches new heights when I consider all the upcoming changes the expanded interior space allows us to make.

We are also looking forward to inviting fellow attorneys from other firms to join in on Continuing Legal

Education (CLE) sessions wherein we can discuss different approaches and advance our own professional self-improvement. In truth, with all this new space, there’s

really no shortage to the number of amazing events we can organize!

While it’s taken four years of arduous planning, the integration of our new office space will drastically change our place in the community for the better. I can’t wait for you to see it!

Assisted living facilities and nursing homes are places where we hope our loved ones can stay safe and be taken care of as they advance in age and live out the remainder of their lives. But the unfortunate reality is that seniors aren’t always 100% safe within the walls of these facilities. It’s been reported that at least half of nursing home residents will fall each year. Hazards within the nursing home, such as slippery floors and uneven surfaces, cause at least 16% of the falls in any given year, and approximately 1,800 residents in nursing homes will die from fall-related injuries while others who survive can still have lasting injuries. While slips or falls are difficult to prevent, you can always walk around the facility and remind your loved one to be careful when moving around. When trying to keep your loved ones safe inside these facilities, be cautious of other nursing home injuries such as dehydration, malnutrition, untreated infections, and bedsores in various stages due to improper hygiene. While physical signs of these injuries are easier to detect, keep an eye out for mental signs of abuse like depression or anxiety, lack of desire to engage in favorite activities, angry outbursts, or an uncharacteristic demeanor. Try to ask your loved ones questions about their experiences, especially if they suffer from dementia or Alzheimer’s and have trouble communicating what’s happening. All of us here at Kramer Law Group understand this topic is never enjoyable to think about, but being vigilant and listening to your family members is the only way to ensure their safety while in these facilities. Not all nursing homes are created equal, and, even though any nursing home can slip up and have a bad day, consistent low scores are a good indicator that your loved one may not be getting the quality care they deserve. We offer a free consultation to help you decide if you have a case worth pursuing. Furthermore, we’re happy to meet with you at your home or even in the nursing facility. WHAT HAPPENED IN REED SPRINGS?

In 2002, the quaint town of Reed Springs, Missouri, declared bankruptcy. The hard decision came after the town was forced to pay $100,000 to Sally Stewart, a woman who sued Reed Springs after she tripped over a pothole during a shopping trip. News of a greedy woman ruining a small village to make a quick buck sparked outrage across the country. But Stewart wasn’t the real villain of this story. A little digging into this case reveals a much deeper conspiracy. Stewart had been visiting Reed Springs in 1998 when she tripped on a pothole hidden beneath some overgrown grass on the sidewalk. But this was no small stumble. Stewart tore two ligaments in her ankle and had to undergo surgery. To help pay for the medical bills, Stewart, who’d never sued anyone before, initially filed a personal injury lawsuit against the owners of the store in front of the pothole. However, the Missouri Court of Appeals determined the city of Reed Springs was liable for Stewart’s injuries. The court ordered Reed Springs to pay Stewart $100,000, over half the city’s annual budget. Despite the high price tag, in normal circumstances, this verdict wouldn’t have forced Reed Springs to declare bankruptcy because the town’s insurance would have covered the bill. Unfortunately, at the time of Stewart’s accident, the mayor of Reed Springs was a corrupt man named Joe Dan Dwyer. Dwyer left office while being investigated for insurance fraud, child pornography, statutory rape, witness bribery, and perjury, and he was later sentenced to seven years in federal prison. Among his many indiscretions, Dwyer also let the town’s insurance policy lapse. Reed Springs didn’t have insurance when Sally Stewart got hurt, which is why they had to write a check out of their own budget and ultimately declare bankruptcy. In this case, what started as a simple pothole accident quickly unveiled the lasting damage of an unscrupulous politician. Perhaps this case serves as reminder about why it’s important to vote in local elections. HOW A SMALL TOWN WENT BANKRUPT OVER A POTHOLE

LOOKING FOR A TRUSTWORTHY PERSONAL INJURY ATTORNEY?

HERE ARE 3 SECRETS TO HELP WITH YOUR SEARCH!

I f you’ve suffered a serious injury from a recent accident, then your “to-do list” probably grows exponentially longer by the day. Between mulling over finances, planning medical appointments, navigating chronic pain, and communicating with insurance companies, you need to find a trustworthy personal injury lawyer to determine whether or not you have a case. Due to an ample supply of personal injury law groups in Utah, you should consider the following criteria before selecting an attorney to help you. WHAT IS THEIR PRACTICE AREA? If you’re deciding between a lawyer who focuses solely on personal injury and other related fields and a lawyer who handles personal injury, estate planning, family and mediation, etc., you should choose the former. Personal injury is a complex area of law involving specialized rules and regulations. An attorney who primarily focuses in this area will be able to serve you better. DO THEY TAKE CASES TO TRIAL? If your case is particularly complicated, there’s a chance it might go to trial. Insurance companies tend to be quite

aggressive, so, if they know your attorney doesn't take cases to court, they might make little or no effort to settle your case adequately or fairly. Don’t be afraid to look through an attorney’s reviews from past clients to see if they’ve handled cases like yours. DO THEY SEND AN ATTORNEY TO MEET WITH YOU? Many firms, especially the ones you see advertised on TV, don’t actually send an attorney to meet with you to discuss your case. They’ll often send a “runner” or “investigator” out to meet with you and sign a retainer for services. You want an attorney who will be invested enough in your case to meet with you personally. Here at Kramer Law Group, we know you have several options when it comes to choosing a personal injury representative. To those of you who have worked with attorney Ron Kramer, and to those of you who have recommended us to others, thank you so much. With over 10,000 successful cases, we aim to win every single case we take on. Call our office today for your free consultation!

Honoring the Canines of 9/11

HONORING THE CANINES OF 9/11

THE 4-LEGGED HEROES OF GROUND ZERO

I n the immediate aftermath of 9/11, thousands of New Yorkers took to the streets to clear rubble, offer supplies, and search for survivors. It was a powerful act of resilience in a deeply trying time, and while most of the individuals helping with the disaster stood on two feet, more than 300 canines also answered the call to service.

dogs burned their paws as they dug through hot rubble, and both handlers and canines inhaled toxic dust. The task was both physically and mentally exhausting for the dogs during their shifts. Some dogs that found deceased victims refused to eat or interact with other animals. Search and rescue dogs became increasingly stressed and depressed the longer they searched without any results, mirroring their handlers. It wasn’t uncommon for handlers to stage mock “findings” of survivors to keep the dogs’ spirits up. Fortunately, the sacrifices these dogs and their handlers made did not go unnoticed. Many dog owners were inspired to earn their search and rescue certifications after the events of 9/11, promising to aid in future disasters and hopefully lessen the impact of such catastrophes. After 9/11, various researchers conducted many studies examining the effect this kind of work has on animals, both physically and mentally. Many of these studies wouldn’t be possible without the AKC Canine Health Foundation, so if you’re looking to give back this September, visit them at their website to see how you can help: AKCCHF.org.

Dogs of all breeds and backgrounds, including search and rescue dogs, police dogs, service dogs, and therapy dogs, were brought in to help find and care for survivors in the wake of the destruction. They worked tirelessly alongside rescue crews as they searched through the debris. Search and rescue dogs and their handlers worked 12–16-hour days, searching for survivors and victims. They worked through dangerous conditions: Many
