Feliks Romulijana Gamzigrad predstavlja reziden- ciju rimskog cara Gaja Valerija Mak- simijana Galerija, zeta Dioklecija- novog.

above the Roman ruins provides a unique opportunity to get acquaint- ed with all aspects of life in antiquity. Felix Romuliana Gamzigrad represents the res- idence of Roman emperor Gaius Galerius Valerius Maximianus, the son-in-law of Diocletian. He is be- lieved to have named it Romuliana after his mother, Romula. The pal- ace appears to have never been com- pleted, with the emperors of the 4 th century having given the magnifi- cent estate to the Christian church. The palace was destroyed by barbar- ians during the 5 th century, only to be rebuilt in the 6 th century by Jus- tinian I, in the form of a frontier fortress. This former imperial resi- dence was abandoned following the invasion of the Slavs at the end of the 6 th century. Galerius built his imperial pal-
ace in the picturesque valley of the Black River, among low hills, and Gamzigrad is perhaps the most at- tractive monument to ancient times that is preserved in Serbia. Visitors to its ruins can uncover, in equal measure, the power and luxury of ancient Rome, but also its artistic sophistication and way of life. Gale- rius’s vision of Romuliana was based on the example of Diocletian’s Pal-
