terial as your lead-in wire. Cau tion : Follow the dimensions care fully. FM AND TV ON THE S am e A n ten na The FM radio band is located right in the middle o f frequencies allocated for the use o f television. This arrangement makes it possi ble to receive both signals on the same antenna. All you need is a television antenna and a change over switch. The switch provides a means o f connecting the anten na to either receiver. Both receiv ers, however, should not be con nected to the antenna at the same time unless a matching device is used. Changeover switches are avail able at most radio stores but you can make your own. Just buy a midget double-pole-double-throw knife switch and follow the dia gram below. Install near your FM or TV receiver.

GOOD FM ANTENNA continued. D irecting Y our A n tenna FM antennae are usually direc tional. So, before you tighten the bracket screws, have someone tune in your favorite station. Then swing the antenna around until the signal is strongest. Or, if you listen to several stations in the same general direction, point the antenna to bring in the weakest station. Then tighten the bracket screws and, you’re all set for fine FM listening. In general, the antenna should be broadside to the station in order to get the strongest signal. If it is built with a reflector, that should be back of the pick-up ele ment. Experiment until the bes. position is determined. H eight is I mportant Get your antenna as high as you can, with safety. I f you have enough space for guy wires, 20 feet is not too high. By all means, however, make sure your antenna is securely anchored. M ak e Y our O w n A erial Here’s what to do if you want a temporary antenna; or if you live in a building where outside antennas are p r oh ib i t ed . By means of the diagram construct your own antenna. Then place it in a closet, under the rug, or run it along the moulding or along the baseboard. If possible orient it the same way you would an outdoor antenna. This home-made antenna can be made for just a few cents. It’s constructed from the same mar

T he A erial L ead - in A two-wire 300 ohm lead-in cable is recommended. This may be purchased from a radio supply house. The lead-in should not run parallel or close to a metal roof, metal ridge-row, eave trough or down-pipe. It should run as near ly direct from the antenna to the receiver as possible. In other words—it should be o f minimum length. Do not use twisted wire electric cord for a lead-in cable. A T w ist C uts N oise While FM radio is static free, your lead-in wire may introduce unwanted noise. To avoid this, just twist the lead-in wire one time for each foot of its length. It works like magic.
